43 Years Ago Today a Young Man Buys A 1966 Corvette

Today is the 43rd anniversary of my father’s purchase of a Tuxedo Black 1966 Corvette from Rohrer Chevrolet in Camden, New Jersey. If you are a new reader of CorvetteBlogger, my original post on this topic from June 2007 will tell you a lot about me and my love of Corvettes. It also gives me a chance to pay tribute to my day who I lost in 1982.

1967 Corvette Sting Ray Burnout at Bloomington Gold

It’s always fun when you see a guy riding a classic Corvette hard. In this video from last weekend’s Bloomington Gold parade, the owner of this Riverside Red ’67 Coupe decides to show how a real burnout is done.

From Corvette Forum Member 67-427ci:

Saturday evening we were invited to attend a picinic held by the Fox Valley Corvette Club which is quite a gathering out in the country. The parade of approximately 500 corvettes goes past the picinc site and is quite a site to see. A few volunteers are out at the road to help control traffic while more cars than I can count stop and do their best attempt at a burnout. Since there were no good C2 attempts made some old guy in a Red Coupe gave it a try.

Stones, indeed!

Bloomington 2009: Harley Earl's 1963 Corvette a No Sale at $985,000

The personal car belonging to legendary General Motor’s automotive designer Harley Earl was a no sale at Mecum’s 2009 Bloomington Gold auction. The Corvette convertible was the main attraction on Saturday where it was introduced with great fanfare. Bidding started at $400,000 for the custom Sting Ray and quickly climbed to the high bid of $985,000 before stalling. The auctioneer proclaimed a no sale (Mecum’s the bid goes on) as the seller set the reserve at $1.3 million.

Bloomington 2009: 1966 Corvette Convertible Sells for $83,500

This Ermine White 1966 Corvette Convertible was one of the high points on the first day of Mecum’s Corvette auction at the annual Bloomington Gold show in St. Charles, Illinois. The L72 427/425 hp V8 powered Corvette crossed the block early Friday and was sold for $83,500. Video of the sale is after the jump.

In 1966 the very first 427 engines found their way into Corvettes. Legend has it that the horsepower rating was over 450 but GM artificially deflated the numbers to please the insurance industry. The new power plant boosted the sting Ray’s street-cred immediately: 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds and a 14-sec quarter mile.

This Ermine White Corvette is a numbers matching original example featuring the L72 427/425 hp engine. The V8 is mated to a 4-speed transmission with aggressive 4.11 gears while the exhaust exits through its distinct shrouded side pipes. Original Kelsey Hayes knock-off wheels, two tops and a teak wood steering wheel complete the classic package.

Both buyer and sellers should be pleased with this sale. The $83,500 paid puts this car in the top 20 of 1966 Corvette 427/425 prices according to Corvette Market’s Database and our Corvette Price Guide has the 1966 Corvette appreciating at 7% per year. Not too shabby in this economy!

Harley Earl's 1963 Corvette Roadster

As the legendary designer and former head of GM’s Color and Style department, Harley Earl will always be remembered for his contributions to automotive design he made during his reign at GM in the heyday of America’s automotive manufacturing era. It was Earl that envisioned the idea of a two-seater sports car in the early 50′s and that idea culminated with the unveiling of the Corvette at the 1953 Motorama Show in New York.

Corvette Values: 1963 Corvette Convertible

by Keith Cornett on May 12, 2009

1963 Corvette Roadster

FA in Texas submitted this 1963 Corvette Convertible to Corvette Values:

1963 Corvette Sting Ray Convertible, VIN #30867S113XXX. 327/300 non-original motor, manual 4-speed transmission, 96K miles. Engine compartment in need of restoration. Transmission locked in reverse, mechanicals including brakes, clutch and suspension in poor condition. Electrical system needs to be rewired, Speedometer not working but tach, oil pressure and temperature gauges function correctly. The Corvette is painted Riverside Red and has a black vinyl interior. The Corvette was repainted sometime ago but is in excellent condition. The seats, carpet and dash are in good condition. Knock-off style wheels and a removable hard top that needs to be restored complete the options. The Corvette was purchased from a dealer and has mostly been sitting since 1984. No documentation or owner history available.

Find out how we valued this Corvette after the jump.

1963 Corvette Roadster 1963 Corvette Roadster 1963 Corvette Roadster

1963 Corvette Roadster with VIN #30867S113XXX. The VIN indicates this Corvette was built in April 1963, the eighth month of 1963 Corvette production. The mileage is stated to be over 96,000 miles.

The paint color is Riverside Red, the original color, however the Corvette has been repainted. The condition of the paint can be termed good as are the seats, door panels and dash. The interior is Black in color. Also, the carpet appears to be in new condition but it was installed over a hole in the floorboard that was not properly repaired. The tachometer, oil pressure and temperature gauges are in working order.

The Corvette is powered by a non-original small block Chevrolet motor that has been modified. It is coupled with a 4-speed manual transmission that is currently locked in the reverse position. Other mechanicals are in need of repair or replacement including the wiring harness, exhaust, suspension, brakes, clutch and headlight lid motors. In general, the exterior and interior of this Corvette have been addressed but the under carriage and engine compartment need restoration.

The exterior body panels are correct with no modifications. The chrome bumpers are correct and in good condition.

The curb appeal of the 1963 Roadster is enhanced with the addition of knock-off wheels and new tires. This Corvette also has the removable hardtop that is in need of repair.

This Corvette was purchased from a Corvette dealer in 1984 and has been in storage until this year. No owner history or documentation is available.

We place a value of $25,000 on this 1963 Corvette Roadster. It has the potential of continuing to increase in value at 5% in average price on an annual basis.

The Corvette Championship Game at VetteBlock.com

I’ve been hanging out quite a bit lately at VetteBlock.com – a new Corvette social networking site that went live late last year. Over the last few weeks, Scott and gang have been entertaining us with the Corvette version of the Sweet Sixteen. After several weeks of voting, its all come down to two of the most iconic Corvettes ever produced: A 1963 Corvette Split Window vs the 1967 427 ci Roadster.

To get to the championship vote, the split window 1963 Corvette took on a rookie – the 2009 Competition Sport Corvette and then defeated the 1990 Corvette ZR-1 in round two of voting. In the final four vote, the SWC took on and defeated the 1971 Corvette armed with a 454 cubic inch engine.

For the 1967 427 Corvette, the path was much easier. In the first round, the hapless 1984 Corvette didn’t put up any defense whatsoever and round two saw the big block Corvette take on and defeat the 2004 Z16 Commemorative Edition Z06. In the final four vote, it was a battle of 427′s as the Sting Ray took on a 1968 big block Corvette and remained undefeated.

Click here for the large bracket version and view the road to the Corvette Championship game.

If you want your vote to count in this epic battle of midyear Corvettes, visit the Corvette Championship Game at VetteBlock.com now. But you better hurry, the voting ends Thursday night at Midnight.

And after you vote, why not stick around and see what VetteBlock has to offer. You can set up your own home page, upload photos and videos of your Corvette, connect with other Corvette enthusiasts and you can even set up a Corvette blog of your own. Pretty cool!

And finally, make sure to check out CorvetteBlogger’s profile at VetteBlock.com!
