One of the topics I love covering at the big Corvette shows are the vanity plates that owners put on their Corvettes. Corvettes at Carlisle is no exception as the thousands of Corvettes parked in the fun field and surrounding lots make for a target rich environment when it comes to seeing the fun and witty comments that owners put on their cars.
Here’s something you don’t see every day – a Corvette Grand Sport (1960s variety) – sloshing its way along muddy roads in the wilds of Africa.
Cars like this are usually seen on a race track competing in motorsport, but this one has been modified by Tachyon Motorsport to be driven by Michiel Campagne and Mike van Thiel on Nov. 29 in Kenya during the East-African Safari Rally, which bills itself as “The World’s Greatest Rally.”
One of our favorite models from the 1960′s is up for grabs this weekend at Mecum’s 2013 Dallas auction. It’s a rare Red/Red 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe with the Z06 racing package. The Red Corvette Split Window comes from the Buddy Herin Collection which also is offering a 1967 L88 Corvette Convertible we featured last month.
One of the highlights of Corvettes at Carlisle is the Saturday evening parade where hundreds of Corvettes make their way from the fairgrounds to downtown Carlisle. Leading the parade was Bill Miller in a classic C1 Convertible while Lance Miller was driving his 2012 Carlisle Blue Corvette ZR1.
Behind them was the GM / Corvette Team reps all driving the new 2014 Corvette Stingrays.
This beautiful 1965 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe was parked in the fun field at the 2013 Corvettes at Carlisle and when we first saw the restored we literally stopped dead in our tracks and started shooting away with our camera.
We’ve been a little C7 heavy here lately so here’s a C2 to mix things up. Mecum Auctions will be offering an uber rare 1967 L88 convertible next month at their Dallas sale. The Marlboro Maroon on black roaster will be crossing Mecum’s red carpet about 2:30pm central time on Saturday, September 7th. It’s one of 11 cars being offered from the Buddy Herin collection that weekend in Texas. Get your banker on the phone now, because this one is going to be expensive, really expensive.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a Rossi 66 sighting, but here is a Pearl White Rossi 66 cruising Woodward Blvd in Detroit during August 2013′s DreamCruise.
Although the concept for the Rossi appeared first back in 2008, it took another two years for an actual car to be built. We believe this is the same Rossi 66 (or SixtySix) that made its debut at the EyesOn Design benefit in Detroit during the summer of 2010.

While the largest one day automotive event in the country was taking place on Woodward Avenue in the suburbs of Detroit, an equally impressive event was taking place sixty miles to the north in Flint, Michigan, a city rich in automotive history.
The spectacular Back to the Bricks car show and the Corvette Reunion welcomed a huge throng of automobile enthusiasts, including Mark Reuss, President of General Motors of North America. Reuss was one of the featured speakers at the unveiling of a bronze statue honoring William “Billy” Durant, founder of General Motors. Durant’s statue will join David Buick and Louis Chevrolet on the brick plaza of downtown Flint. Most of downtown Flint was closed to accommodate the thousands of cars and crowd of spectators, estimated at over a half million, along the streets of the historic city.
The Woodward Dream Cruise is billed as the largest one-day car event in the world. Each year on the third Saturday in August about 1.5 million people and 40,000 or so collector cars descend on historic Woodward Avenue in metro Detroit. It’s the pinnacle of the annual automotive week of ecstasy we told you about a couple weeks ago.
It took Maureen Robinson a long time to be able to fully appreciate her father’s 1963 Corvette Sting Ray.
Her dad, Michael O’Brien, bought the light blue split window coupe in 1964 and seemed to have a sense early-on that one day it would become a collector’s item – in more ways than one.
