Auction Preview: 1957 COPO Corvette Racer

Another week, another vintage Corvette race car hitting the auction block. We received word today that the ex-Bob Mouat 1957 Corvette COPO Air-Box Fuelie will be joining the 1965 Corvette 8-Ball Cobra Killer at Worldwide Auctioneer’s Houston Classic on Saturday May 2nd.

This 1957 Corvette was delivered new to Bob Mouat in 1957 and raced until 1965 achieving 21 victories and over 50 top ten finishes. Extensively documented, its one of 23 Air-Box examples known and this is only one of six factory COPO Airbox Corvettes aquired by known racing drivers.

Vette Magazine called the race car “an open-track threat right off the assembly line”. Worldwide Auctioneer’s Managing Partner John Kruse says “this splendid, factory big brake, ‘Air-Box Fuelie’ example is the most extensively raced and well documented ’57 Corvette race car of all time.”

Other notable Corvettes available at the Houston Classic include the 1965 Caplan/Gulstrand Corvette Racer aka the 8-Ball Cobra Killer, the ex-Alan Sevadjian, John Mecum 1967/74 Corvette “Delmo Johnson Racecar”, a numbers matching 1968 Corvette L89 roadster offered at no reserve and a 1954 Corvette roadster.

1953 EX-122 Corvette at New York's Motorama Show

Fifty-six years ago on January 17, 1953 the American public was introduced to the Chevrolet Corvette concept car at the largest car show of the time, General Motors’ Motorama. Held at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the show attracted over 45,000 people on opening day.

Based on the feedback from the Motorama show, the Corvette was rushed into production and the first production Corvette rolled off the assembly line just six months later on June 30th. Only 300 were made the first year and the sticker price was just under $3,500.

One of the attendees of the Motorama show was a Belgium immigrant named Zora Arkus-Duntov who was so taken with the Motorama Corvette that he wrote a letter to Chevrolet’s Chief Engineer Ed Cole asking to work on the new sportscar. Zora joined GM a few months after this event and went on to transform the Corvette into the performance car we know today.

All Corvettes are Blacks

A new Corvette DVD called VetteCollections will be heading our way in 2009 and the show features an in-depth look at some of the coolest Corvette collections in the country. One of those collections highlighted is the Bill Mullis collection of Ashville, North Carolina. Featuring more than two dozen Corvettes spanning the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations and a sampling from the C5 and C6 generations, you will see all have one thing in common – they’re all black.

The Corvette collection starts with a Black 1954 and covers every succeeding year through 1968. Multiple body styles and powertrains make up the collection and Bill says only a Black 1965 Fuelie Coupe has eluded him to date.

If this segment is representative of all the segments on the forthcoming VetteCollections DVD then count me in for a copy. We’ll be watching the VetteCollections website for news of the release date and perhaps another promo will be released in the meantime.

Here’s a call you don’t want get from your Corvette restoration shop: “About your 1962 Corvette Roadster. There’s been an accident down here at the shop and well, you should probably get down here right away while the cops are still around.” That scenario probably came true for one unlucky owner after an SUV owner lost control of his Jeep and crashed through the wall of a St. Augustine restoration shop.

There’s just something special about a barn car seeing the light of day after years of storage. Despite the thick coat of dust and the surface rust that cloaks the engine compartment, beyond the dirty interior and ripped seats, there’s the overwhelming feeling that this Corvette is about to get a fresh start. A new owner somewhere is about to embark on a journey of restoration – whether by himself or through the service of a restoration shop – with the end reward being that this Corvette will once again hit the open road.

The original owner of this 1962 Corvette roadster parked her in a barn one day in 1973 and there she sat for the next 35 years. The owner recently sold the Corvette to Valley Auto in Bedford, PA who promptly listed the beige convertible on eBay where is sold last week for $26,000.

The description states that this is a non-matching car as the original engine was stolen years ago but was replaced with a correct 870 block heads and intake. The VIN tag reads 20867S111262 which puts the assembly of the Corvette in May 1962, about 4 months before last 62 Corvette would be completed and the C1 Solid Axle era would come to an end.

The new owner has many choices ahead to make for the future of this fresh barn car. Whether a historically accurate restoration or a resto-mod build awaits this Corvette is anybody’s guess. But that’s part of the fun of owning one of these special cars, isn’t it?

As many of you have winterizing on the mind as temperatures drop and snowy weather looms, along comes a commercial from STA-BIL reminding you to add the fuel stabilizer product to keep fuel from breaking down and gumming up the engine. The ad features all the elements of a typical commercial: an obsessive owner Corvette owner Jack, the know-it-all neighbor Ned, and of course, a stunning C1-era Red Corvette roadster.

If you’ve seen the previous STA-BIL ads, you’ll know the vehicle owner never listens to the advice to add the fuel stabilizer. And like previous commercials, we’re left with the image of the Corvette not starting because ol’ Jack was such a hard head. When you store, start with STA-BIL!

As a side note, I checked my books to ascertain the correct year of the Corvette, but because of the angle and the reflection on the coves, I can’t tell if they are painted or not. So a little trivia question: If the coves were painted, what is the model year of this Corvette?

Bruce Willis' 1957 Corvette Roadster

The 1957 Corvette roadster owned by Bruce Willis was sold at the Bonhams & Butterfields’ California Classic auction on Saturday. The White/White convertible was hammered for a sale at $79,560 which included the undisclosed buyer’s commission. Bruce’s second Corvette in the auction was a 1967 Marlboro Maroon 427/435 Convertible that didn’t reach reserve and was unsold.

The 1957 Corvette was a gift to Bruce Willis from his ex-wife actress Demi Moore. Bruce had the non-standard Blue/White Corvette repainted to Polo White and upgraded the mechanicals by installing front disc brakes with a power booster and adding power steering. The Corvette came with the base 283 ci 220 hp V8 engine and it apparently is an original Radio Delete car.

Here is the description of the Bruce Willis 1957 Corvette from Bonhams & Butterfields:

The early Corvettes advanced steadily from the near-prototype hand built construction of the first 300 Corvettes in 1953, through their 3,640 successors in 1954, both with Blue Flame six-cylinder engines and Powerglide, through the first V-8 powered 1955 Roadsters of which only 700 were built.

1956 saw Corvette make a major evolution, becoming a true convertible with rollup windows. For the first time its distinctive fender side coves appeared. 1956 also brought Corvette’s first optional high performance engine. Described as “for racing purposes only”, its dual 4-barrel carburetors could be combined with RPO 449 high lift camshaft to deliver something like 240 brake horsepower from the little 265 cubic inch Chevy V-8. It was a harbinger of things to come.

Corvette fully matured in 1957 with a laundry list of 283 cubic inch engines and other performance options. There were five available engines, starting with the 220hp V-8 and ending, of course, with the famous 283/283 Fuelie engine. On April 9, 1957, just over half way through the year’s production, Corvette closed the last gap in its stature as a true sports car with the addition of the Borg-Warner T10 4-speed manual transmission to its options list.

Attesting to the success of the evolved Corvette concept and its execution was the year’s production, 6,339 cars, nearly double the 1956 total of only 3,467.

One of them was this base model Corvette which Demi Moore gave to Bruce Willis. It has had a thorough restoration and is still in sharp, near-showroom condition. A base 283 cubic inch, 220 horsepower car with Powerglide transmission, it was finished in Light Blue with White coves and White upholstery. Although it has a heater it is apparently an original radio delete car, as it has the factory blanking plate in the instrument panel cutout and no RF suppression shielding on the secondary ignition wires.

Bruce Willis then set out to give it some personalization, including installing disc front brakes with a power booster, power steering and radial tires (reproduction BFG Silvertown wide whitewalls) for better handling on 15” wheels with spinner wheel covers. The color combination was non-standard so Bruce entrusted it to the acknowledged experts at Performance Paint in Torrance, California to repaint it in a gorgeous nearly pure bone white color. It comes with both hard and soft tops, both in white to give it a consistent all-white presentation that is outstanding.

It is described as a sweet running Corvette in excellent overall running and driving condition and is ideal for cruising or weekend jaunts in the country. Its all-white presentation is dynamically different and will stand alone among any Corvette display.

If purists ask why it’s presented this way the response, “Because this is the way Bruce Willis wanted it,” is virtually guaranteed to start a conversation.

1958 Corvette Resto-Mode was the top Corvette sale at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas

As mentioned earlier today in our Results post, it seems wholly appropriate that the top Corvette sale at Barrett-Jackson’s inaugural collector car auction in Sin City was a Resto-Mod. On the final evening of the auction, this Silver-Blue 1958 Corvette Roadster was bided up and hammered home for $170,000.

This Corvette is a Resto-Mod done right. Blending the classic looks of the 1958 Corvette and preserving its stock appearance, one might never guess that lurking under the hood is a C6 Corvette’s 400 hp LS2 V8 coupled to a Tremec 6-speed transmission. Creature comforts like power steering, power windows, air conditioning, heated seats, iPod deck are all included.

The Corvette was built by Greg Thurmon of GTS Customs. The design concept was to preserve a stock look without sacrificing modern conveniences, handling and ride. This blend was achieved by converting original gauges to work with the LS2, painting the car in the original color of Silver Blue, custom dying the leather to match the stock Silver Blue vinyl, adding custom stock appearance shift plate, converting the original radio to AM/FM and most notably having custom wheels created to duplicate the look of the 1958 hubcaps, scaling up the diameter to accommodate modern profile 55 series tires.

Reportedly costing over $225,000 to build, the Corvette was sold for $170,000 to a very enthusiastic buyer.
