GT2 Corvette C6.R To Hit Test Track in March

In a recent article highlighting Corvette Racing’s Green initiative, GM Road Racing Group Manager Steve Wesoloski said the development of the GT2 Corvette is on track and should be ready to test for the first time in mid to late March.

As the C6.R racing program readies for the 2009 season, the American Le Mans Series and Michelin announced their partnership for the Michelin Green X Challenge. It was last year that Corvette Racing adopted cellulosic E85 and in doing so helped transform the image of Corvette from a gas guzzler to an energy efficient race car. Wesoloski says GM will continue the Green initiative as the GT2 race car will offer additional efficiencies:

“Certainly there have been lessons learned,” Wesoloski said. “There is a cross over with the production powertrain group as they are taking a lot from the V8 engines we race to make them compatible with E85. Those are things we learned from racing. Another thing we are doing with the GT2 car is weight. We have embraced the aluminum frame from the Z06 and ZR1. You can put these materials in the race car and (embrace) new technologies.”

“It’s going to be a long time before the auto industry finds the one magic solution,” he admitted. “In the meantime we’re all looking for answers. This (cellulosic E85) is one. We’re saying you don’t have to be afraid of ethanol. It’s good enough to race and good enough to drive to soccer practice. And we’re not touching the food chain. We’re trying to send that message, and using a cellulosic process is a big deal.”

Based on Wesoloski’s time frame for testing the GT2 Corvette, I’m wondering if its possible we’ll see the new car at Sebring. And why not? The 12 Hours of Sebring happens March 21st and with the entire Pratt & Miller team in Florida for the event, why not get the car on the track a day or two after the race (and after the GT2 competition has left) for a couple of test sessions. I’m also sure the C6.R fans would go ga-ga if they could get up close and personal with the new GT2 Corvette that is expected to carry on the winning tradition of the GT1 program.

American Le Mans racing kicks off its 11th season at the 12 Hours of Sebring on Saturday, March 21. SPEED will televise the race live from 10 am – 12 noon and then from 2-11 pm EST.

Marcel Fassler and Antonio Garcia Joins Corvette Racing Team

Corvette Racing has announced a new driver lineup for the 2009 American Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans and two new faces have been added for the endurance events. Marcel Fassler (L) will team up with Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta in the #4 Corvette C6.R and Antonio Garcia (R) will join ALMS GT1 Defending Champions Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen in the #3 Corvette C6.R.

Marcel Fassler hails from Switzerland and been a winner in the FIA GT Championship with the Phoenix Carsport Corvette C6.R and won the prestigious Spa 24-hour race in 2007. He also briefly raced for Audi’s LMP1 team last year. Fassler has already been announced as part of the Speedy Sebah Lola-Aston Martin team for the 2009 Le Mans Series. Fassler has competed in the DTM, the European Le Mans Series, A1 Grand Prix, and the FIA GT championship.

Spanish driver Antonio Garcia won the GT1 class at Le Mans last year driving for Corvette’s arch rival Aston Martin. Most recently, Garcia was part of the winning Brumos team at this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona. Garcia has raced in the European Touring Car Championship, the World Touring Car Championship and the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.

“Antonio and Marcel have the ability, the experience, and the mindset that we look for in a Corvette Racing driver,” said GM Road Racing Group manager Steve Wesoloski. “We’ve seen their speed on the track, and we know they have the discipline and team-oriented attitude that’s essential for success in endurance racing.”

Fassler and Garcia replace Max Papis and Ron Fellows in Corvette Racing’s three endurance events: the 12 Hours of Sebring, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 10 hour Petit Le Mans. Papis is making the move to break into NASCAR full time this season while Ron Fellows has moved into an ambassadorial role with the Corvette Racing team.

Corvette Racing also confirmed that they will run in the GT1 class at the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Grand Prix of Long Beach before heading to France in June to compete for the 10th time at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Following their return from France, Corvette Racing will transition to the GT2 class at Mid-Ohio as the team prepares for a full season of GT2 racing in 2010.

Auction Preview: 1965 Caplan/Gulstrand Corvette Racer

Vintage race Corvettes with provenance are selling at record numbers and we now have word of another significant Corvette racecar set to hit the auction block in May. The 1965 Corvette roadster nicknamed the “8-Ball Cobra Killer” was one of the most dominating Corvette race cars of its day. The Corvette will be a winner once again as its offered for sale at the 5th Annual Houston Classic Auction hosted by Worldwide Auctioneers.

The 1965 Corvette was owned and raced by Herb Caplan alongside the legendary Dick Gulstand. One of the most dominating cars at the time, the 8-Ball Corvette saw most of its action on the west coast and won 46 of 49 races in a single season. Today the Corvette is restored to its original 1966 race specs.

LG Motorsports Makes Bid to Race GT2 Corvette at Le Mans

Our friends at Badboy Vettes are telling us that the Black and Flames #28 GT2 Corvette belonging to LG Motorsports and Lou Gigliotti has applied to the ACO for a GT2 entry in June’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. As for the rest of the season, Lou says its all about Le Mans.

With continued support from car builder Riley Technologies and several new French sponsors including the French Corvette Club, Lou feels they will get strong consideration from the ACO, the organization that hosts the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“Our season hinges directly on our Le Mans application. If we do get accepted, we have funding for Le Mans, Sebring, St. Pete, Long Beach, Mid-Ohio, Petit and Laguna.”

The #28 Corvette and the LG Motorsports team were at Sebring last week for the winter test session. According to Lou, it was track time well spent:

“We were there and got down to a 2:03.5 which was about 1.5 seconds off the fastest Michelin time of the 3 day test. We were on last year Dunlop compound which is behind what the BMW team now has.”

“I ran almost 8 hours of testing in two days during 4 two hour sessions. I only got out of the car between two hour sessions. ”

“We didn’t have our proper 1st gear for the hairpin but we will for the race.”

We saw the new GT2 team make great strides last year before funding problems took them out of several races. Seeming to show improvement after each race, we were much impressed with the #28 Corvette during last year’s Utah Grand Prix where the car was in contention for much of the race.

Should the LG Motorsports team get its invite to France, then we are assured of seeing the Lou and his #28 GT2 Corvette at the ALMS opener at the 12 Hours of Sebring on March 21st.

2009 GT-1 Championship Edition Corvette

Tom Hill, Quality Engineering Manager at the Corvette Assembly Plant announced to NCRS members attending the Winter Regional meet in Kissimmee, Florida last weekend that a new limited edition package called the GT-1 Edition would be produced this Spring. Like the Competition Sport Package, the GT-1 Edition centers around the Corvette Racing theme with team mascot “Jake” prominently displayed.

The package will reportedly be available on Coupe, Convertible and Z06 models. They will include your choice of either 45U Velocity Yellow with Black Stripes or 41U Black with Yellow Stripes. Both colors feature the now familiar “Jake” mascot as well as other graphics inspired by the Corvette Racing C6.Rs like the distinctive yellow windshield banner.

Another unique feature will include graphics that will have the driver’s names on the roof just like the C6.R. The championships that the Corvette Racing C6.R team has won will be displayed on a lower door script graphic. Other features include black headlamps on the Velocity Yellow models and Genuine Corvette Accessories (GCA) body colored door handles and carbon fiber patterned engine covers.

All GT-1 Championship models include the ZR1′s full width spoiler in body color and Q9V Forged Chrome Wheels. The Coupe and Convertible models will come equipped with the Z51 Performance Package and NPP Performance Exhaust.

Each of the GT-1 Edition interiors will receive exclusive GT-1 embroidery on the seats and console lid. Ebony 4LT (Coupe and Convertible) and 3LZ (Z06) interiors and shifter will be accentuated with yellow stitching. Included will be a Special Console Trim Plate with specific VIN sequencing and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Pricing and availability are expected sometime in February.

With 2009 being the end of Corvette Racing’s reign of the GT-1 class in the ALMS and Le Mans, collectors and Corvette Racing fans alike will have the opportunity to show their support when driving this unique tribute to the C6.R team to a Corvette corral later this year and beyond.

While still waiting for an official announcement from GM regarding pricing for the 2009 Corvette’s Competition Sport package, sources told Jalopnik that the Z51-Equipped 1LT Coupe version will run $55,655 while the Z06 1LZ model will set you back $77,500 including charges.

Chevy is aiming this limited edition Corvette for the owner who attends driving schools and track events. Available in Z06 or Z51 configurations, the CSC package is ready for some serious performance driving. With the focus on keeping the Corvette lightweight for performance driving, you’ll see some serious track-influenced design features:

Dr. Dick Thompson, aka “The Flying Dentist” dominated SCCA racing in 1963 with this factory-backed 1963 Corvette Z06 race car. On Saturday afternoon at the Mecum High Performance Auction in Kissimmee, Florida, the “Gulf Oil” Corvette dominated the field once again with an auction-high gavel price of $1,050,000!

Dr. Thompson was on hand to sign autographs and introduce his old Corvette. He joked that the Corvette looked better today than it did when he was driving it. Noted Z06 historian Eric Gill was also on the stage and showed the original starting lineup for the 1963 24 hours of LeMans that had “Gulf One” in the #1 position followed by Mickey Thompson’s Z06 in position #2. Unfortunately, GM pulled out and “Gulf One” never made it to France to compete on the world stage.

Bidding on the “Gulf One” Corvette Z06 opened at $400,000 and quickly climbed to $900,000. When the bid topped $1 million the crowed cheered and that seemed to elicit one more bid of $1,050,000 which removed the reserve. No other bids came in and the hammer dropped on this historic race car.

Although the $1.05 million selling price of “Gulf One” is significant, it was still less than the $1.485 million paid for the 1962 Gulf Oil Corvette that sold in August of 2008 at Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach auction. That Corvette was also driven by Dr. Dick Thompson who finished first in class 12 times including wins at Daytona and Sebring and captured the 1962 SCCA-A production championship.

Gulf One 1963 Corvette Z06 Race Car

Mecum Auctions calls “Gulf One” the most desirable 1963 Corvette Z06 of them all! Delivered from Yenko Chevrolet to Gulf Oil’s Grady Davis in October 1962, this Corvette Z06 was race prepared and rushed down to the Puerto Rico Grand Prix where it scored its first class win. With the “Flying Dentist” Dr. Dick Thompson at the wheel, the Gulf Oil sponsored Z06 became the most successful factory-backed production racing Corvette of the C2 era.

In addition to the Z06′s historical racing achievements, the Corvette itself is significant as it represented at the time the most dramatic advance in production Corvette performance. Of the 21,513 Corvettes produced in 1963, Gulf One was 1 of only 14 regular production Corvette Serial Numbers assigned specifically for competition and it was the first of 2 Serial Numbers assigned to Yenko Chevrolet specifically for competition.

After the win at Puerto Rico, Gulf One took the A-Production class win at Marlboro, Maryland in January 1963 and then was prepped for FIA competition for races at Daytona and Sebring. Thompson and Gulf one placed third overall and first in GT3 class at Daytona in February behind two Ferrari GTO’s, but a disappointing gearbox failure at Sebring marred the car’s impressive qualifying performance.

Thompson barnstormed Gulf One across the country, winning 1st place overall at the SCCA President’s Cup at Marlboro, Maryland and the A/Production class at Danville, Virginia and Road America. In all, Gulf One saw more racing combat in more venues than any of the other “Specially Assigned” factory Z-06’s and was always at the front of the pack.

Today, the Gulf One Corvette Z06 has been restored and appears as it did on the starting grid of the 1963 Sebring 12 Hours. Mecum will auction the Corvette this Saturday around 2:30pm at the annual Mecum Kissimmee auction in Central Florida. On hand to witness the sale as well as meet and greet fans is the “Flying Dentist” himself, Dr. Dick Thompson.

Corvette Racing: 2009 Le Mans Campaign Confirmed

A GT1 Corvette at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Last week we brought you the report from AutoSport Magazine that claimed Corvette Racing was pulling out of 2009′s 24 Hours of Le Mans due to budget constraints. But Program Manager Doug Fehan rebutted that report as erroneous and says the Le Mans Challenge is a go.

The AutoSport report suggested that Corvette Racing wouldn’t compete at Le Mans and would instead focus on developing the new GT2 Corvette that is set to debut in the second half of the 2009 ALMS season.

Fehan says the plans to compete in GT1 at the beginning of the season and at Le Mans are still on.

“The primary focus of the race team is the 12 Hours of Sebring, Long Beach and, of course as it always has been, the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” he said. “We tested the GT1 car at Sebring in November, and we will be utilizing Sebring and Long Beach to put the final touches on the Le Mans effort.

“We’re continuously developing the car and package for fuel mileage, efficiency and new materials from our various suppliers. We want our last GT1 appearance at Le Mans to be successful. The team understands the importance of a victory at Sebring, Long Beach and Le Mans to close the GT1 program.”

Fehan also took the opportunity to address the progress of new GT2 Corvette C6.R and says development is on schedule to debut the new car at Mid-Ohio in early August.

“Engineering and fabrication continues to focus on the GT2 program,” he said. “We expect the first actual race car to be completed in early February and will be testing that car in the spring.”
