Corvette Values: 1966 Corvette Convertible

KF of South Carolina submitted this 1966 Convertible to Corvette Values: 1966 Corvette Convertible, VIN 194676S1108XX. Recent “Frame-Up” Restoration including new Nassau Blue (original color), rebuild of the original 327 ci 300 hp engine, new suspension and new disc brakes front and back. Options include 4-Speed transmission, posi, AM/FM radio with power antenna and a teak steering wheel. Car is in excellent, show condition and won best of class at local car show. Interior is all new and all gauges work properly. Restored hard top. Corvette is mechanically sound and drives great. Corvette has 51,000 miles. This 1966 Corvette Roadster, VIN# 194676S1108XX has had a recent “frame-up” restoration. The restoration included a Nassau Blue repaint, Nassau Blue being the original color. It was the most popular of all paint colors for the 1966 Corvette model year. This exterior paint is termed in “show-Ready” condition documented by a “Best in Class” award at a local car show. The interior has a new dark blue vinyl seat coverings, a newly installed White convertible top, and restored dash dials, radio and clock all in working order. This 1966 Roadster is powered by the original, matching numbers base 327-300 motor that is coupled with a 4-speed manual transmission. The front and rear suspension has been rebuilt and new disc brakes were added, front and rear. The mileage shown on the odometer is 51,000 which is considered low for a 40 year old car. Options on this Corvette are minimal, however, they include a restored removable hardtop, teakwood steering wheel, and Positraction rear axle and AM/FM radio with a power antenna that is functional. The tires appear to be new and the wheels have the correct standard wheel covers. We place a value of $49,000 on this 1966 Corvette Roadster. Corvette Values: 1968 Corvette Convertible

RP from NJ submitted the following to Corvette Values: 1968 Convertible. VIN 194678S4000XX. Repainted Burgundy. Black vinyl interior. 33,500 miles on a non-original 350/350 engine and 4-speed transmission. Corvette has power steering, power brakes and telescopic steering column. No documentation. Car is in average, good street driven condition.
This Corvette was built early in the 1968 model year, in fact during the first month of production in September 1967. It is reported to have 33,500 miles on the odometer. It’s powered by a non-original 350/350 engine coupled with a manual 4-speed transmission. The engine compartment is clean and has the correct air cleaner and ignition shielding. The non-original Burgundy paint and Black vinyl interior are classified as being in good condition and, with the chrome bumpers and wheel trim, present an attractive profile. The body panels and interior are “stock” with no modifications. Also, the Black convertible top and rear window are in good condition as are the front and rear chrome bumpers. The wheels are correct including he wheel trim and center caps. Factory options include power steering and brakes as well as a telescopic steering column. These “comfort” options are desirable. We place a value of $19,500 on this 1968 Corvette Convertible. From a substantiation perspective, one in similar condition sold at the Mecum Classic and Collector Car Auction in Orlando last January for $19,500. Of interest is the one year appreciation factor in average price on the 1968 Corvette Convertible which is 10%. Submissions:

Barrett-Jackson Corvette Sales Top $6.5 Million

83 Corvettes rolled across the auction block at the Barrett Jackson Palm Beach Spring Event last weekend bringing in a sales total just over $6.5 million dollars. A sales commission of 8% is factored into our totals as published at the Barrett-Jackson website. The highest selling Corvette was a 1967 Marina Blue 427/435 hp coupe with 33,780 documented miles. It sold for $259,200. Two other Corvettes also broke the $200k level. A Penant Blue 1954 Corvette sold for $237,600 and a 1958 Fuel Injected White/Silver convertible sold for $205.200. 80 Corvettes At No Reserve

Originality vs Over-Restored

Last week at VetteFinders.com, our Corvette classifieds and appraisals website, we received an order to appraise the value of a 1965 Corvette coupe. Usually, this is a fairly easy process and the owner of the car provided very complete answers to the questionnaire that we require which allows us to place an approximate value on such a car. First, here are some details of this 65 Coupe: 1965 Coupe, VIN 194375S123XXX. Blue with Blue interior (not original colors), Body off restored in 2005. 396 ci 425 hp, 4-Speed transmission. Power Steering, Brakes, Windows. Factory Side Exhaust, Knock-Offs. Telescopic Steering Column. Also the following RPO’s: A01, A31, F40, G81,J 50, K66, L78, M20, N14, N32, N36, P48, T01, U69. Car is in “Excellent, Show Condition” and has won the following awards: Second Flight NCRS, Bloomington Silver. No owner history was available including any original ordering and delivery documents. This coupe was loaded with desirable options. Among them are power steering, brakes and windows, as well as a telescopic steering column and teak steering wheel. It is equipped with the F-40 special front and rear suspension, knock off wheels and side mounted exhaust. These three options are classified as “rare” with less than five percent of the 1965 models built with these options. Sounds like a great coupe, right? Catch the last line of the description? “No Owner History Available”. And that’s a serious issue we have when it comes to correctly appraising a classic Corvette. Corvettes are a hot commodity these days. Most Mid-Year Corvettes have yearly double digit appreciations and buyers are paying premiums for big block motors and rare options. If you’ve watched the Barrett-Jackson auction over the last couple of years you understand what I am saying. Unfortunately, in a hot market, one of the first casualties is Originality. I’m not talking numbers matching originality. I’m not talking NCRS originality. I’m talking about how THAT particular Corvette was equipped when it rolled down the assembly line and was delivered from the Chevrolet dealership to the first owner. It was only in 1967 that Chevrolet started including build sheets on top of the gas tanks that showed how that Corvette was equipped when it was assembled. If you are buying a pre-67 Corvette, the most important documentation you can have is the window sticker or sales documentation which included the options for that particular car. Many owners were smart and held on to these documents and passed them on to the new owner when the Corvette was sold. There is a joke about the 1967 L88 Corvettes. Chevrolet only produced 16 of them, but there are at least 20 in existence. Some restorers were able to recreate the magic of the L88 and even without having the documentation to prove it was originally an L88, there are people ready to buy into the lie and pay the bucks to acquire such a “rare” corvette. If there were 100 L88 Corvettes available in the marketplace, what does that do the values and uniqueness of the original 16? When doing a frame-off restoration, it is easy is it to add options that originally were not on the Corvette when it was assembled. Options that would add “rare” to the description. And when the restoration is complete, the owner goes out and gets the Corvette certified through the NCRS and Bloomington so that when it hits the auction block, he gets his premium. As our appraiser started working on the substantiation for our 1965 Coupe, he first believed he had a $100,000+ car. But the more he researched and reviewed the photos, not everything was as it appeared. So we had a conversation with the owner. He claimed he had spent over $100,000 in the restoration of the Coupe and wanted us to provide an appraisal for that amount for his insurance. I told him our concerns over the lack of documentation and how that plays a role in valuations, but he didn’t care. He had just received Second Flight status from NCRS and a Silver award at Bloomington and was preparing the car for Top Flight and Gold and eventually a Duntov award. We don’t know if options were added during the restoration, but without the documented history of the Corvette, we could never justify the number he felt he needed, so we refunded his appraisal order and suggested he look elsewhere. Over-restoring a Corvette seems to be acceptable in a hot market, but at some point the classic car market will cool as it did in the late 80’s and those that buy these cars will be left hanging in the wind as the marketplace corrects itself and the speculators move on to the next great money-making idea. This experience has me thinking about the future of Classic Corvettes. What will happen to market values and the hobby overall when anyone with enough money can build a Corvette with whatever options he feels is profitable? What would be the point of sharing the documented history of a car if in the end it doesn’t matter? All of us involved with Corvettes have a vested interest in trying to preserve what constitutes Originality not only from a Numbers-Matching issue, but from preserving the Corvette as it passes from owner to owner.

Corvette Pricing Trends of 2005

In our first two installments of our 2005 Corvette Pricing Trends series, we looked at the Top 11 Appreciating Corvettes and the Top 10 Depreciating Corvettes. In the last installment of our pricing series, we look at how each generation performed market-wise in 2005 and what the pricing expectations are for 2006: 1953-1962:
This series is unquestionably the appreciation leader for the 2006 Price Guide with five models leading the way. We would be amiss if we did not identify two of the rare 1953 models that crossed the auction block at an average price of $106,250 at an appreciation factor of 9%. The entry level Corvette for this first generation is the 1961 model at an average price of $38,200 with appreciation identified at 6%. We look for this Series to continue to climb at an appreciation level of 8-12% during 2006. Stay tuned for our action results. 1963-1967:
The appreciation range for these models was between 3-12%. As noted earlier, two of the models, the 1964 Roadster and 1963 Coupe were included in the highlight list. The entry level mid-years continue to be the 1964 models that are approaching $30,000 in average price. Not long ago, a good buy was considered to be a mid-year at under $20,000. During 2006, the good buy number will be those that are bought for under $30,000. The price leader for the group continues to be the 1967 Roadster at an average price of $49,500. The Roadsters continue to be priced at an average price of $2,000 more than the Coupe within a given year. The exception is the 1963 Coupe with its unique split-window styling that reflects a wide margin of $7,000 when compared to the Roadster. Also of interest was the high price for these models, seven of the ten broke the $100,000 threshold. Our projection for this series in 2006 is appreciation in the 5-10% range. 1968-1982:
This Series reflects a wide range of average pricing from $8,300 (the 1978 T-Top) to $23,500 (the 1969 Roadster). The appreciation factor range from 14%, the 1969 T-Top mentioned earlier to the 1973 Roadster at no-change at an average price of $18,000. None reflected negative results. Most of the higher appreciation factors were registered for the “chrome bumpers” Corvettes. In addition, an array of high performance motors was offered with this Series. Few of the third generation Corvettes are sold at prices under the $10,000 mark. For 2006, prices under $10,000 will become the good buy threshold. Noteworthy is that seven of the models sold for high prices over $50,000. We look for a range of 4-9% appreciation during 2006 for the 1968- 1982 Series. 1984-1996:
We continue to see positive trends for the fourth generation Corvettes. Two years ago, 26 of the 38 Corvettes in this Series reflected negative results. Last year this number dropped to 20. During the 2005 calendar year, we noted this number was reduced further to 13. As time progresses, based on current trends, all of these models should begin to reflect positive numbers. As with the previous generation, only four of the 38 models are priced below $10,000 in average price. This is another “Good Buy” level being established. The ZR-1 performance Corvettes are showing good results with four of the six models showing positive results in the range of a 1- 7% appreciation factor with top honors going to the 1990 ZR-1 at an average price of $26,000. Again, much as what has happened with the 1978 Pace Cars, we continue to see 1990 ZR-1s crossing the auction block with minimal mileage. 1997-2004:
As noted previously, a number of the C5 models were included in the high depreciation list, however, only one showed double digits. On the plus side of the ledger, nine models are showing depreciation levels at 5% or less with one showing no-change. Note this positive trend, last year results showed 17 of the models reflecting double-digit depreciation and only two were under the 5% mark. Thus, the C5 trends are heading in the right direction. The one Corvette that shows no-change in average price is the 1997 Coupe at an average price of $18,500. From a production perspective, 9,752 of these “first year” were built. We see the average prices of the C5 models depreciating at an average level of 5% for 2006. And, a few of the C5 models should be available for under $20,000, an outstanding buy for the Corvette enthusiast. 2005-2006:
The 2005 models were covered earlier. The 2006 model inventory at your local dealer should be good enabling a buyer to negotiate the “right price”. And as we all have seen, the 2006 Z06 is the big news this year. The base price of this world class performance machine is $65,800. We are seeing these sold at Dealer Auctions for an average price of $73,700. For the C6 models, depreciation during 2006 is expected to be at the 10% level. Credits

Depreciating Corvettes: The Top 10 of 2005

Continuing with our discussion of Corvette Pricing Trends from 2005, we now look at Corvettes whose values are still depreciating. The C5s (1997-2004) continue to show single digit depreciation results with one moving to a no-change designation, however, none have moved into the positive column at this time. The 2005 model C6s are showing low double digit depreciation, the norm for a new model. In the depreciation chart, the majority of Corvettes were C5 models, same as last year, with two new additions this year, the C6 models and one of the C4 models – the 1996 Collector Edition Roadster.

The 2005 C6 Corvette Coupes and Roadsters were at the top of the list in 2005 with a 14% and 12% depreciation factor, respectively. This is not surprising since this is the norm for first year standard production Corvettes. Adding to the low double-digit depreciation factor is the fact that a number of these Corvettes sold at over list price initially due to pent up demand and this activity inflated the original base prices. Two of the Hard-Top models made the list, 2000 and 1999 models. These show a higher depreciation level than the Coupe and Roadster in their respective years primarily due limited options available on these models and no way for owners to “catch rays” with the fixed roof concept. Two of the early model C5s also made this list, the 1998 Coupe and Roadster reflecting single-digit depreciation. Please note that single depreciation for a newer model cannot really be considered as “bad”. Many of today’s buyers are looking at the 1999-2000 models that offer more options and are passing on the 1998 models. The good news is in the buyer’s arena. A C5 for $20,000 is a real buy considering all of the handling, performance and technology that the C5 provides. Two of the Z06s made the list. Their depreciation results can be attributed to the introduction of the C6 with comparable horsepower (Z06- 405HP vs. C6 @ 400HP). Also, they are no longer ‘King of the Hill’ especially with the new 505HP Z06.
