Barrett-Jackson Preview: 1967 427/435 Yenko Corvette

by Keith Cornett on January 13, 2007

In today’s collector car world, the name “Yenko” is associated more with Camaros, Novas and Chevelles than Corvette. But the association of the legendary Corvette Hall of Fame member should be synonymous with Corvette and here is why. Before Don Yenko and Yenko Chevrolet became one of the largest “supertuners” of GM muscle cars in the 60′s and 70′s, Don raced Corvettes. Driving for the Gulf Oil Racing Team in the early sixties, Yenko and teammate Dick Thompson dominated the A & B Production classes, and Don captured the B Production crown in 1962 and 1963. Fast forward to 1967. Yenko is now fielding his own team with support from Sunray DX Oil Co and wins the 1967 12 Hours of Sebring’s GT Class in a 1967 L88 Corvette. In the late 1960s, Michael Summers was one of the drivers for Yenko’s Corvette racing teams, and his personal Corvette, ordered through Yenko Chevrolet, is the focus of our Barrett-Jackson preview.

1967 Yenko Corvette
The car is a fully documented, 427 hp/435 ci numbers-matching Yenko Corvette Convertible. This Corvette is one of only five of the rarest color combinations (White with Bright Blue Trim and Interior) and one of the highest factory optioned Corvettes known to exist. Renowned Corvette restorer Nabers Brothers of Houston completed a body-off restoration in 2002. Documentation includes the original Protect-o-Plate signed by Don Yenko, tank sheet, order sheet, owner history, original pictures with a video of the original owner, Michael Summers. The 1967 Yenko Corvette has two NCRS Top Flight Awards (98.7%) and is Bloomington Gold Certified. The Corvette contains the following factory RPO’s: AO1- Tinted Glass

U15- Speed Warning Indicator
U69- AM/FM Radio The 1967 Yenko Corvette (lot #1326) is scheduled to cross the auction block on Saturday, January 20th. This Corvette is truly a collector car and a fantastic piece of Corvette history.

2006 European Corvette Sales

by Keith Cornett on January 11, 2007

The Corvette brand continues to be well accepted in GM’s European Market. Sales totaled 1,257 Corvettes for 2006, which was on par with 2005 Sales. These numbers are significant to GM as prior to the C6 model, yearly Corvette sales were in 300-400 range. Part of the GM strategy for introducing the Corvette to European buyers has been the building of a number of specialized dealerships for Cadillac/Corvette/Hummer. In 2006, Cadillac saw 22% growth in sales while Hummer H2 and H3 Sales tripled to 1,848.

2005 SEMA Corvette For Sale on eBay

by Keith Cornett on January 5, 2007

2005 SEMA CorvetteThis 2000 Corvette started life as most Corvettes do, but then John Wargo of the Custom Shop got hold of it for a bit of an upgrade for the 2005 SEMA show in Las Vegas where it was featured at Sony’s Mobile Audio booth. Since the SEMA appearance it has been displayed at most of the major Corvette shows as well as featured in several Corvette magazines and calendars. The Corvette was completely worked over and now features such amenities as a polished Vortech Supercharger, JBA Headers, Corsa Exhaust and a custom interior from Mid America Motorworks. And because the Corvette was built to be displayed at the Sony booth, it has an audio system containing an in-dash TV/DVD and 6,000 watts of power. You can view a video of the Corvette being built for the SEMA show on Google Video. The Corvette is being offered with a Buy It Now price of $69,900. Check out the auction for more photos.

KBB (Unofficially) Names Z06 Corvette Best Resale Value

by Keith Cornett on December 1, 2006

2007 Z06 CorvetteKelley Blue Book released their list of vehicles with the best resale value for 2007. The 2006 Corvette made last year’s list but unfortunately gave its spot away this year to the likes of the Mini Cooper (both hatchback and convertible) and the Pontiac Solstice. And while I don’t usually like to tell people how to do their jobs, it would make sense for this list to have a sports car category. However, reading through the KBB survey I was elated when I came across this statement:

Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Awards exclude expensive, high-performance, low-volume vehicles, because of the program’s emphasis on serving the typical consumer. The No. 1 vehicle would have been the 2007 Corvette ZO6, holding the greatest percentage of its original value after a five-year ownership period.
The Z06′s limited production (about 6,000/year) and somewhat higher price probably got her left off this list. Had that not been a consideration, our favorite super car would not have only made the list, it would have been number 1. Source: Kelly Blue Book

Spotted on CraigsList: Barbie’s 1990 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on November 18, 2006

1990 Corvette For SaleWhen you think of Pink Corvettes, you probably have visions of Barbie and Ken motoring around the family room floor. Browsing CraigsList today, we found a Corvette in the San Diego area that Ken wouldn’t be caught dead in – a custom pink1990 Corvette. Description of the Ad:

Yes… A Pink Corvette! We just had the engine rebuilt. It was bored 30 over and it runs AWESOME. Unfortunately, we cannot keep it. We also replaced the leather seats and the CD player. We fixed a bunch of stuff because we were planning on keeping it. I think it is a heck of a deal and a good car. And…. IT’S PINK!!
A Pink Corvette that’s been bored 30 over? We’ll call that a double threat with looks and performance, as long as Barbie is in the drivers seat. Source: CraigsList.com

Replica 1956 Corvette Nomad Ready to Roll

by Keith Cornett on November 14, 2006

In 1954, Chevrolet rolled out a one-of-a-kind Corvette Nomad for the 1954 Motorama car show. The concept featured the front end of a 1954 Corvette mated to the backend of the Nomad station wagon. While the concept never reached production, we often wonder what if had the concept taken off. Corvette World in Dallas, Texas has for sale a replica of the Motorama concept, albeit built on a 1956 Corvette body. We like anything with Corvette grilles and coves especially when powered by a 283 ci Fuelie and this one-of-a-kind classic doesn’t disappoint.
