When Customizing Corvettes Goes Too Far

by Keith Cornett on September 1, 2006

One of the timeless debates about classic Corvettes revolves around modding/customization versus the pursuit of Matching Numbers restoration. We see these conversations all the time on some of the forums and people are usually quite passionate on both sides of the debate.

Corvettes at Carlisle Show This Weekend

by Keith Cornett on August 25, 2006

One of the largest gatherings of Corvettes in the US takes place this weekend at the Corvettes at Carlisle show in Carlisle, PA. The three day show at the 82 acre fairgrounds in Carlisle brings together more than 5,000 Corvettes, including over 2,500 Corvettes in the show field alone. The show was founded by the late Chip Miller, a Corvette Hall of Famer, 25 years ago. At noon, Corvette owners will rev their Corvettes for 20 seconds, followed by a moment of silence in tribute of Chip. Highlights of the show will include a gathering of the 1996 Grand Sport Corvettes, celebrating their 10th year reunion, a 50th reunion for 1956 Corvettes and a special area designated to Z06 Corvettes. Tom Wallace and his team of Corvette engineers will be on hand. This is Tom’s first visit to Carlisle. Thousands of Corvettes also participate in the parade that leaves from the fairgrounds and makes it way through downtown Carlisle. If you are anywhere near Pennsylvania and the surrounding area, this Corvette show is a must. Admission is $12 for adults and parking for Corvettes is $10. CorvetteBlogger.com will bring you the results from the Mecum Auction when they are available. Source: Corvettes at Carlisle

Carlisle Auction Preview: 1966 Corvette Convertible

by Keith Cornett on August 20, 2006

1966 CorvetteCorvettes at Carlisle and the Mecum auction will be the center of the Corvette universe for the next 7 days. This auction is traditionally one of the largest Corvette auctions of the year. Last week, we featured a Triple Black 1969 Convertible. Our second featured Corvette that’s available at the Carlisle Auction is this beautiful Milano Maroon 1966 Corvette: 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible – Lot #S65 Same owner for 32 years, has owner history. Original/Numbers Matching, Restoration completed in June 2006, all receipts. New paint, carpet, interior, 90% all original. 327/350 HP original (Block 38581747) L-79 FT227HT 112715. Style 66 467, trim st, body A-3834, paint 988 Milano Maroon. Original Muncie 4 speed, close ratio, M-21, 3:70 posi rear (AO), alternator (110069). Original 2 ½” cast factory headers, brand new factory original Holley Carb (3367A), Original factory teakwood steering wheel, AM-FM working original radio with power antenna. Factory side exhaust, gold line tires, Original factory hubcaps, New soft top. 57,947 Miles. Original jack and spare tire and original Owners Manual. Again, it is our second feature Corvette to not have a big block, but this Corvette is a great entry car for the new collector or someone wanting a turnkey midyear. Fully documented, longtime ownership and an optional motor all work in favor of this classic. We place an expected range of this Corvette to be a good buy between $48,000 and $55,000. One year appreciation levels for the 66 Convertible are running just under 5%. The Mecum auction at Corvettes of Carlisle runs August 25-26th in Carlisle, PA. Source: Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers

Carlisle Auction Preview: 1969 Corvette Convertible

by Keith Cornett on August 14, 2006

1969 CorvetteWe may be a bit premature in talking about Corvettes at Carlisle and the Mecum auction held that same weekend as the events are still two weeks away. But we just can’t resist a good old fashion Corvette auction. We are a bit disappointed/concerned/shocked to see that the current auction list is only two pages long – totaling just over 50 Corvettes. We’re hoping to see more Corvettes added soon to this very important and historically well-attended auction. Turning our attention to the current list, we see several gems that can’t be overlooked. We now bring you the first in a series of featured Corvettes available at Corvettes of Carlisle August 25-26th in Carlisle, PA: 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible – Lot # S39 Triple Black! Tuxedo Black exterior, Black Leather Interior and Black canvas convertible top. 4 speed, side exhaust, hard top, AM/FM radio, tinted glass, leather trim, redline tires, positraction and fender trim. This Corvette is powered by the 350 ci/300 hp base engine and with a frame off restoration has loads of curb appeal. Auctions aren’t just for big blocks and the 1969′s are quickly becoming the new highly sought-after classic. This could be a good opportunity to get in at a very reasonable price. Our appreciation figures for the 1969 Convertible are an impressive 8% year to year growth. Source: Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers

GM Reported that Corvette sales were up 55% year to year with 2,794 deliveries in July 2006 vs 1,872 in July 2005. Calendar year sales also remain 18.1% ahead of 2005 figures with 21,857 deliveries vs 18,506. Sales of Corvettes in July tend to be smaller than other months because of the model year change over. Corvette Values: 1982 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on July 28, 2006

1982 CorvetteSissyChrissy posted the following question on Yahoo Answers: This guy is trying to sell me a 1982 Corvette Stingray. Brand new candy paint job, brand new motor, golden rims, leather interior, everything in excellent condition. The thing is, I don’t know how much a car like that is actually worth. He says he paid $16,000 for it and is not going to settle for anything less. Is he trying to rip me off or is he being reasonable? Our Answer: 1982 was a good year for Corvettes. It was the end of a body style that began in 1968. Just over 25,000 Corvettes were produced that year, nearly 15,000-20,000 less than an in previous years which means there’s less of them on the road. It was also the first year of the Cross Fire Injection engine. Our Corvette Price Guide has the average 1982 Corvette valued at $11,900, and our high price is $24,500. These models are also appreciating in value with a 7% return in 1 year and 14% over 5 years. While the Corvette you are looking at sounds like it is in great condition, its value is lessened by having a brand new engine instead of the original engine. At $16K, if the Corvette is as in good shape as you described, the price, while reasonable, is somewhat high due to the fact that it is missing its original engine. That might make it harder to sell down the road. Source: Yahoo Answers

GMS and GMID Pricing for 2007 Corvettes

by Keith Cornett on July 27, 2006

A member of CorvetteForum.com posted the GMS and GMID Pricing for the 2007 Corvette. GMS is essentially employee pricing and GMID is special pricing for employees of GM suppliers. If you qualify for one the price breaks, your next goal is to find a dealership that can accommodate you. Not all dealerships offer the breaks, so a good place to start is searching the forums and asking around. And even though Z06′s are part of the GMS/GMID Program, good luck finding either a Z06 available AND a dealer willing to sell below MSRP.

1971 CorvetteLess than a week after Dale Jr auctioned his 2006 Corvette on eBay, we’ve come across another celebrity selling a Corvette on the auction site. Matthew McConaughey, who rose to fame with roles like Wooderson on Dazed and Confused has put his 1971 Mediterranean Blue Corvette on eBay as part of Oprah’s Angel Network to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims. What I can appreciate about this auction compared to some of the other celebrity auctions in the past is from the comments about the Corvette from McConaughey himself:

“Back in 98 I went to a California car show and was lookin at gettin a 1962 Vette, but this 71 Stingray caught my eye. I was at the show for 8½ hours and I kept circlin back to spend time checkin it out. By the end of the day I drove off in my 1971, mediterranean blue, Chevy Stingray Convertible. I call her Mako…like the shark.” “The lines on this Vette are my favorite lines on any sports car…it’s got the shoulders & the hips. The Vette always has that long front end with the shoulders where the wheel wells come up and then continues on back to where it widens nicely at the hips. This year, Corvette really knocked the design out of the park…it’s got muscle and it’s built for drivin. You don’t get it for the gas mileage…it’s not a tiptronic Porsche. When you wanna get it, you feel the horse power in your backside. The music in this car is listenin to the engine…for me it’s the quintessential, bare bones, badass American sports car.”
100% of the proceeds will be donated to Oprah’s Angel Network charity. The auction runs through July 27th and 36 bids have taken the current bid to $44,100. Source: eBay via Autoblog
