Corvettes For Sale

Celebrity Sighting: Rush Hour Corvette For Sale on eBay

by Keith Cornett on October 11, 2006

The 1972 Corvette Convertible driven by Chris Tucker in the movie Rush Hour is up for grabs on eBay. The current bid is at $17,990 and there is just a little over one day left for bidding. The Corvette has a reserve price which has not yet been met, and the Buy It Now price is listed at $49,998. The seller claims that this Corvette is one of the most famous Corvettes in existence due to the movies. I don’t think I would go that far, but the 72 Corvette Stingray is a beauty, despite the fact that Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan signed the dash. Oh wait, that should only add to the collectibility, right? Here are some photos of the Rush Hour Corvette:

When Customizing Corvettes Goes Too Far

by Keith Cornett on September 1, 2006

One of the timeless debates about classic Corvettes revolves around modding/customization versus the pursuit of Matching Numbers restoration. We see these conversations all the time on some of the forums and people are usually quite passionate on both sides of the debate.

Carlisle Auction Preview: 1966 Corvette Convertible

by Keith Cornett on August 20, 2006

1966 CorvetteCorvettes at Carlisle and the Mecum auction will be the center of the Corvette universe for the next 7 days. This auction is traditionally one of the largest Corvette auctions of the year. Last week, we featured a Triple Black 1969 Convertible. Our second featured Corvette that’s available at the Carlisle Auction is this beautiful Milano Maroon 1966 Corvette: 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible – Lot #S65 Same owner for 32 years, has owner history. Original/Numbers Matching, Restoration completed in June 2006, all receipts. New paint, carpet, interior, 90% all original. 327/350 HP original (Block 38581747) L-79 FT227HT 112715. Style 66 467, trim st, body A-3834, paint 988 Milano Maroon. Original Muncie 4 speed, close ratio, M-21, 3:70 posi rear (AO), alternator (110069). Original 2 ½” cast factory headers, brand new factory original Holley Carb (3367A), Original factory teakwood steering wheel, AM-FM working original radio with power antenna. Factory side exhaust, gold line tires, Original factory hubcaps, New soft top. 57,947 Miles. Original jack and spare tire and original Owners Manual. Again, it is our second feature Corvette to not have a big block, but this Corvette is a great entry car for the new collector or someone wanting a turnkey midyear. Fully documented, longtime ownership and an optional motor all work in favor of this classic. We place an expected range of this Corvette to be a good buy between $48,000 and $55,000. One year appreciation levels for the 66 Convertible are running just under 5%. The Mecum auction at Corvettes of Carlisle runs August 25-26th in Carlisle, PA. Source: Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers

Carlisle Auction Preview: 1969 Corvette Convertible

by Keith Cornett on August 14, 2006

1969 CorvetteWe may be a bit premature in talking about Corvettes at Carlisle and the Mecum auction held that same weekend as the events are still two weeks away. But we just can’t resist a good old fashion Corvette auction. We are a bit disappointed/concerned/shocked to see that the current auction list is only two pages long – totaling just over 50 Corvettes. We’re hoping to see more Corvettes added soon to this very important and historically well-attended auction. Turning our attention to the current list, we see several gems that can’t be overlooked. We now bring you the first in a series of featured Corvettes available at Corvettes of Carlisle August 25-26th in Carlisle, PA: 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible – Lot # S39 Triple Black! Tuxedo Black exterior, Black Leather Interior and Black canvas convertible top. 4 speed, side exhaust, hard top, AM/FM radio, tinted glass, leather trim, redline tires, positraction and fender trim. This Corvette is powered by the 350 ci/300 hp base engine and with a frame off restoration has loads of curb appeal. Auctions aren’t just for big blocks and the 1969′s are quickly becoming the new highly sought-after classic. This could be a good opportunity to get in at a very reasonable price. Our appreciation figures for the 1969 Convertible are an impressive 8% year to year growth. Source: Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers

1971 CorvetteLess than a week after Dale Jr auctioned his 2006 Corvette on eBay, we’ve come across another celebrity selling a Corvette on the auction site. Matthew McConaughey, who rose to fame with roles like Wooderson on Dazed and Confused has put his 1971 Mediterranean Blue Corvette on eBay as part of Oprah’s Angel Network to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims. What I can appreciate about this auction compared to some of the other celebrity auctions in the past is from the comments about the Corvette from McConaughey himself:

“Back in 98 I went to a California car show and was lookin at gettin a 1962 Vette, but this 71 Stingray caught my eye. I was at the show for 8½ hours and I kept circlin back to spend time checkin it out. By the end of the day I drove off in my 1971, mediterranean blue, Chevy Stingray Convertible. I call her Mako…like the shark.” “The lines on this Vette are my favorite lines on any sports car…it’s got the shoulders & the hips. The Vette always has that long front end with the shoulders where the wheel wells come up and then continues on back to where it widens nicely at the hips. This year, Corvette really knocked the design out of the park…it’s got muscle and it’s built for drivin. You don’t get it for the gas mileage…it’s not a tiptronic Porsche. When you wanna get it, you feel the horse power in your backside. The music in this car is listenin to the engine…for me it’s the quintessential, bare bones, badass American sports car.”
100% of the proceeds will be donated to Oprah’s Angel Network charity. The auction runs through July 27th and 36 bids have taken the current bid to $44,100. Source: eBay via Autoblog

Dale Jr’s 2005 Corvette For Sale on eBay

by Keith Cornett on July 7, 2006

Apparently Dale Earnhardt Jr is in the process of upgrading his car collection and to make room for the new toys (a new Z06?), he is auctioning his 2005 Corvette coupe on eBay. The Coupe has been repainted a custom black cherry-pearl with custom air-brushed flames. Custom 20/22 inch Asanti wheels adorn the 6-Speed Corvette as well. The winner will have the option of having Dale Jr’s signature on the dash, as well as the opportunity to travel to Dale’s home in North Carolina to pick up the Corvette from the NASCAR star in person. Bidding started at $59,999.99 and the current high bid is $60,099.99 with just two bidders so far. The auction runs through Saturday, July 15th.

Gus Grissom’s 427 Corvette a No-Sale

by Keith Cornett on June 26, 2006

The 1967 Corvette Convertible owned by Astronaut Gus Grissom was a no sale on e-Bay today as the high bid of $310,100 failed to reach the seller’s reserve price. While we do not know what the reserve price was, we did speak with Dr. Marv Friedman to find out what his plans are for selling Grissom’s 427/435 land rocket. Marv said he has listed it twice now on eBay and that this was the second and final listing. The first was in May 2006 where the Corvette reached a high bid of $375,000 but still failed to reach reserve. If the car didn’t sell via eBay then it would tailored out to the Barrett-Jackson auction in January 2007. “I have already spoken with Craig Jackson to make plans to bring the Corvette out to Scottsdale in January for the 36th Barrett-Jackson Auction”, said Marv and continued, “We’re making plans for Jim Rathmann, the former Florida car dealer who sold the Corvette to Gus and who was good friends with him and his wife Betty, to be on the podium to introduce the Corvette.” Marv said that while he did have some offers on the Corvette, one substantial offer would have resulted in the Corvette being taken out of the United States. Marv declined the offer but acknowledged that the winner of the bidding for the Corvette at Barrett-Jackson could end up doing the same thing. Marv mentioned that he is also working on establishing a Gus Grissom Scholarship at Purdue University, where Gus attended college. 2007 will mark the 40th Anniversary of the fire that took the lives of Gus Grissom and fellow astronauts Roger Chaffee and Edward White during a launch pad test at the Kennedy Space Center. View the eBay listing which has some great stories about Gus and his Corvette as well as lots of photos and documentation.

Gus Grissom’s 1967 Corvette Listed on eBay

by Keith Cornett on June 20, 2006

Space Pioneer Gus Grissom had the right stuff when it came to his Red 1967 Corvette Convertible. Nights were spent on the deserted tracks and back roads of Melborne, Florida racing other astronauts. The story goes fellow astronaut Alan Shepard, who fashioned a reputation for himself as “Mr. Corvette”, couldn’t beat Gus’ 427 Corvette as Gus had installed a 4:56 rear end giving him a tremendous edge in 1/4 mile racing. Grissom, the second American in space, and the first American to travel into space twice, was also one of the first to die in the U.S. space program. His Corvette went through four owners before winding up with Jim Falkowski, who purchased the Corvette in 1985 for $9,995. During Jim’s ownership, the Corvette won many awards including NCRS Top Flight, multiple Cypress Gardens, the National Corvette Homecoming in Bowling Green and has been featured in numerous magazines, news articles and calendars.

There is something about a car once owned by a national hero. When paired with a ’67 427/435 Red Convertible, the myth grows exponentially. Now the Gus Grissom Corvette is listed on eBay, giving someone a chance at owning history. Current bid as of June 20th was $178,099 with the Reserve not yet met. The auction runs through June 26th.
