Bloomington Gold Auction Results

by Keith Cornett on July 10, 2006

America’s preeminent Corvette Auction, the Gold Auction at Bloomington Gold was held June 16-17 in St. Charles, Illinois and over 300 Corvettes crossed the auction block with 56% of the Corvettes selling. To say that I am disappointed that many of the Star cars did not sell is an understatement, but that is a subject that I will be addressing later. With an A-List of Corvettes available including two 1967 L-89 Corvettes (16 produced) and a 1967 L-88 (20 Produced) and the #005 1953 Corvette commonly referred to as the DuPont Corvette, who would have thought the top selling Corvette for the weekend would be a pink 1964 GM Style car that was originally built for the wife of Chevrolet’s Bunkie Knudsen. That Corvette sold for $367,500. Also topping the $300K mark was the #9 1955 Corvette Roadster which sold for $346,500. What I think the bigger news about Bloomington Gold is the list of Corvettes that didn’t sell. The Marlboro Maroon 1967 L-89 Convertible reached a high bid of $400,000 and the 1967 Green L-88 Coupe topped out at $340,000. A 1968 L-89 only reached $65,000 in bidding and was a no sale. The Corvette with the highest bid that failed to sell was the 1962 White Corvette racer built by Zora to be raced at Sebring by a Dallas Chevy dealer. Bidding for that Corvette reached $900,000. There did appear to be many good deals available. Over 65 Corvettes sold under the $20,000 threshold including some early C3′s. Results appear after the jump. Here is the list of Corvettes that were sold at the Bloomington Gold Auction. We will post the list of non-selling Corvettes tomorrow.

June’s Corvette Sales

by Keith Cornett on July 6, 2006

GM reported that Corvette sales were up 21.6 percent year to year with 2,938 deliveries vs 2,417 deliveries in June 2005. Calendar year sales are also up 14.6% with 19,063 Corvettes sold in 2006 vs 16,634 in 2005. While GM is getting hammered by the press and pundits for having a 25% decline in total sales, mostly due to the success of last year’s employee pricing program, Corvette remains a bright spot for the General as the 2006 model year closes out.

Bloomington Gold Corvette Auction Preview

by Keith Cornett on June 16, 2006

Today begins the most significant Corvette auction of the year and the one that sets the Gold Standard for all other Corvette auctions to follow. Yes, I’m talking about the 34th Annual Bloomington Gold Corvettes USA show at St. Charles, Illinois. Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers is once again handling the Gold Auction and from taking a look at the list of Corvettes already consigned to the show, I can tell you that that this is going to be a good one. Here are six of the most valuable Corvettes to go through the Bloomington Gold Auction. Click the photo for a larger picture or click the link to view the description:

1953 – #005 1955 – #009 1967 – L89

1967 – L89 1967 – L88 1969 – L88
Included in this year’s Gold Auction are some very rare Corvettes. Two 1953 Corvettes, including #005 which was the first Corvette sold to the public, will be going through the auction on Saturday. The second 1953 Corvette will be paired with a 1993 Corvette, both carrying the matching serial number of #258. Also featured will be 10 classic Corvettes from the Dr. Vance Shappley Collection. Included in this collection is a pair of original GM factory styling cars, a pair of Z-06 coupes and a 1969 L88 Coupe. The two Z-06 coupes, a 1963 and a 1964, will be sold as a pair; the remaining eight will be sold individually. And what would Bloomington Gold be without some rare Big Blocks? This year, three of the most sought after 1967 Corvettes will make their appearance on the Auction Block. Two L89 Corvettes – a convertible and a coupe – both with matching number 427/435 engines featuring the L89 aluminum heads will be sold Saturday afternoon. The L89 option was so rare in 1967 that only 16 were produced. Both cars contain extensive documentation. Next is a 1967 Corvette Coupe with a 427/435 L88 – 1 of only 20 produced. These three Corvettes should see high six figures if not passing the million dollar mark based on the current collector car market. Check back next week or subscribe to our newsletter as we will be posting the prices for all Corvettes sold at the 2006 Bloomington Gold Auction. Source: Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers

C5 Corvette Featured in MPH Rearview

by Keith Cornett on March 9, 2006

Jay Lamm at MPH-Online.com does a nice review of the C5 Corvette and what to look for when purchasing a pre-owned version of the American sports car icon. Jay (any relation to Michael Lamm at Corvette Enthusiast magazine?) does the C5 good as he delves into not only the performance and mechanics of the 1997-2004 Corvette, but into the psychology of “the lifestyle” that being a Corvette owner entails – or as he puts it “seriously anal whack-jobs.” Okay, well I resemble that remark, and you will too when you purchase your first Corvette! Bob Lutz Reaches Out

by Keith Cornett on February 23, 2006

Bob Lutz, GM’s Vice Chairman, recently wrote on the GM FastLane Blog about the state of General Motors perception in the marketplace. The perception or misperception is that GM is producing vehicles nobody wants, or the vehicles they do produce are built at a lower quality than the imports. Bob blows those two perceptions out of the water with the examples of Corvette winning MotorWeek’s Driver’s Choice Award and Corvette winning the Intellichoice Best Overall Value Award. For those of us involved in the Corvette hobby, we know all about GM’s commitment to not only giving us the Car we want to own, but following through by giving us one of the best made cars with one of the highest customer satisfaction levels. So how does GM (and Chevrolet) do so well in marketing these two attributes to potential Corvette buyers, but not so well on their other vehicles? Obviously, Corvette has a history and therefore a built-in base of fans so it is a bit easier for Corvette designers and engineers to read the tea leaves when working on changes and upgrades. And when new Corvettes hit the marketplace, there are already long list of buyers who have deposits down to secure their car. GM needs to get its product in front of their target market in more non-traditional arenas. We recently posted a story about the Drive experience GM is putting together in Las Vegas where consumers can drive GM products in a controlled environment. I also remember they had similar “Drive A Chevy” experience that would roll into a market for a couple of days and you could drive all their products. I think that perhaps GM should take the product display a little further. At a local upscale mall I visited this weekend, I saw a display of Jaguars from the local Jag dealership. GM should consider putting Minivans and SUV in Grocery Stores and displays at some of the larger local youth sporting events. Truck displays at outdoor and sports trade shows. I know it sounds simplistic and perhaps a bit unrealistic, but go where the demographic market is. GM should also introduce a new extended warranty or key a portion of existing advertising to quality of product issues. With both Toyota and Ford are going Green, a new campaign could help differentiate how GM’s products are built with the consumer in mind. Again, I am just a guy that loves Corvettes and not a domestic auto marketing expert. But my car selling theory is that to sell product, you have to get it where your market is. Hope that helps, Bob.
