Auction Results: Des Moines High Performance Auction

by Keith Cornett on September 15, 2007

Continuing with our round-up of Corvette results at the nation’s top automotive and classic car auctions this summer, we turn our attention to the Des Moines High Performance Auction held by Mecum High Performance Auctions on July 28th. The one day event brought together a diverse group of 17 Corvettes with 13 of those Corvettes selling. That’s a very respectable sales rate of 76%. The Corvettes at Des Moines were mostly in the vintage of 1967-1995 excluding the few on either end of that spectrum that were no-sales. High price went to a 1967 Corvette Convertible with the base 327 ci 300hp engine. This documented 2-owner Corvette fetched $64,050. A 1978 Replica Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Corvette sold for $19,950 and a 1991 Corvette ZR-1 sold for $23,363. Here are the full results:

Auction Results: Corvettes at Carlisle 2007

by Keith Cornett on September 4, 2007

Earlier this year, the Carlisle Events team decided to jettison long time auction partner Mecum Auctions in favor of taking the Corvettes at Carlisle auction in-house. At the time, the decision probably made a lot of sense. They were already doing auctions for their other events. And by keeping it in house, they merge the coordination of the auction with their current operations and collect the fees and commissions from buyers and sellers. But after the lackluster showing last weekend of having only 82 Corvettes consigned which then culminated in just 26 Corvettes being sold, one has to wonder just what went wrong in Carlisle. At last year’s event with Dana Mecum handling the gavel duties, just over 150 corvettes crossed the block with 53% selling, netting a sales total of over $3,000,000. This year, with a sales rate of 32%, sales totaled only $974,950. From all accounts, the new indoor venue was a hit. So let’s hope this was just a one year blip and that Carlisle will return next year with the powerhouse auction Corvette buyers and sellers have come to expect. Corvettes Bring in $2.5 Million During Monterey Auctions

by Keith Cornett on August 28, 2007

The auctions from Christies, RM Auctions, Bonhams and Butterfield and Gooding & Company combined for nearly $2.5 million in Corvettes sales. The top price-getter was a 1968 L88 Corvette Coupe, which sold for $254,500. On the newer end of the sales spectrum, a 2007 Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Championship Z06 Corvette sold for $121,000. Friday’s Featured Corvettes for Sale

by Keith Cornett on August 24, 2007

Earlier this week I broke the news that the Corvettes at Carlisle auction was being reduced to just a Saturday-only auction. Since we are one day out from that event, I thought it would be appropriate to look at several of the cars that have already been consigned and ready to sell. 1963 Corvette Coupe
1963 Corvette CoupeMy top pick for the show is the 1963 Corvette Z06 Coupe (Lot C021). The Silver Blue Corvette, already desirable due to its split window configuration is just 1 of 199 Corvettes to have the Z06 option and 1 of 63 to have the NO3 36 gallon “tanker” option. The Corvette is a matching numbers car with correctly dated 327 ci 360 hp fuel injected motor. The odometer reads 89,000 miles, but 0 miles have been put on the Corvette since 1973.The Corvette has both NCRS Top Flight and Bloomington Gold certificates. Click here to view the Auction Description page. 1967 Corvette Convertible
1967 Corvette ConvertibleThis 1967 Corvette will probably not sell for the highest price of six 1967 Corvettes to go though the show, but it’s certainly one of the nicest we’ve seen on the Carlisle List. The Marina Blue Corvette Convertible is powered by a 427 ci 400 hp coupled to a Powerglide transmission. Documented with the tank sticker, this Corvette has a host of options including Air Conditioning, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Windows, Side Exhaust and Rally Wheels on Red Line tires. It received a Bloomington Gold Certificate back in 2002. Click here to view the Auction Description page. 1999 Mallett 435 Corvette Coupe
1999 Mallett 435 Corvette CoupeFinally, what would Carlisle be without a Corvette from the late co-founder of Corvettes at Carlisle Chip Miller. Chip’s 1999 Mallett 435 is selling at no reserve. Featuring a Mallett 435 Conversion, the Black on Black C5 has 500 hp. Only 17,200 miles are on the Corvette, and you can bet that it has “never seen rain”. The Corvette’s Mallett conversion includes a 6.1 liter 372 CI V8 engine, Long tube headers, and body emblems with the “Mallett 435″ logo. A very nice tuner Corvette with a pedigree of having been owned by one the greats in the Corvette hobby. Click here to view the Auction Description page. Do you have a Corvette for sale that you think would be worthy of being featured? Drop me an email and let me know where we can find out more about it. And stay tuned for next week’s Friday’s Featured Corvettes.

Auction Results: Russo & Steele Monterey 2007

by Keith Cornett on August 23, 2007

1967 Corvette with 427 ci 400 hp and A/CWow, there was some real talent at last weekend’s Russo and Steele auction in Monterey. Nine Corvettes sold for a total take of $804,650. Fetching the top price for Corvettes was the 1984 Lola GTP Corvette Race Car which sold for $269,500. Of the eight other Corvettes that sold, three Corvettes were original A/C cars and two were Fuelies. Best catch of the day just may have been this 1967 Coupe with the L68 427 ci 400 hp with factory air conditioning. That Corvette sold for a very reasonable $70,400. Here are all the Monetery 2007 Corvette auction results with links to the auction page:

Carlisle Auction Reduced to One Day Event

by Keith Cornett on August 22, 2007

Just about everybody that has a passing interest in Corvettes is familiar with the Corvettes at Carlisle show held annually in Pennsylvania this time of year. For the last few years, Dana Mecum has been at the helm of organizing and gaveling the auction. However earlier this year the Carlisle events team announced that they would be taking the Corvette auction duties in-house. Today I spoke with Auction Manager Dennis Baish about this weekend’s event. Dennis confirmed what I heard that the actual auction will happen on Saturday only while Friday night has been reserved for a sellers reception. The auction website currently has 78 Corvettes consigned and Dennis believes they are on track for 100 Corvettes this weekend. While this number is down from the 160 quoted on the website, the quality of Corvettes that have been consigned appears quite good. Many times the measure of a good Corvette auction is the number of 1967 Corvette Big Blocks available. The consignment list shows six 1967 Corvettes and at least four of them are 427′s. Perhaps the most exciting Corvette available so far is a 1963 Z06 Big Tanker Coupe which should be one of the top Corvettes sold this weekend. We’ll have more on this Corvette later this week. Do you have a Corvette to sell? Remember what Terry Michaelis from Proteam Corvettes said earlier this week: Be a smart seller by picking high profile events to sell your Corvette. The fees for consigning your Corvette at the Carlisle auction appears to be quite reasonable for such a high quality Corvette-only auction. Buyers pay $100 registration fee with a 5% buyers commission added to the sale of any Corvette. Sellers pay a $250 or $400 consignment fee depending on the time the Corvette is scheduled to cross the block. Sellers also pay 6% for cars selling with a reserve or 5% for no reserve cars. 1957 Corvette RoadsterKruse International held three separate auctions through the month of July and here are the results. Only 6 of the 17 Corvettes listed were sold, but as these are general auctions, the sales precentages for Corvettes sold at a reserve price tend to be lower than pure Corvette auctions like we see at Bloomington or Carlisle. Auction Results: Bloomington Gold Totals $8.2 Million in Corvette Sales Technorati Tags:

The Roby Price 1967 Corvette ConvertibleWith the release of the Bloomington Gold Auction Results from Mecum Auctioneers, we getting some interesting insight into what may be happening with the Corvette Market. 295 Corvettes crossed the auction block during the three day auction weekend, with 145 being sold for a total of $8.2 million in Corvette Sales. That is a 49% sales success rate for the 2007 Gold Auction. Comparing this year’s Gold auction to the 2006 Auction, we see declines in total cars available (295 vs 344), Sales totals ($8.2 million vs $10.4 million) and percentage sold (49% vs 56%). Okay, Keith. So what does that mean? It means that we may finally be moving back to an enthusiast-driven market, where Corvettes are being bought to be driven, instead of the Collector Market, where Corvettes are bought to be stored. Drivers almost always sell for less than trailer queens, which brings down the prices you see at auctions. A higher percentage of cars that don’t reach reserves and therefore don’t sell tell you that sellers were holding out for prices that didn’t materialize. So this may be a slightly simplistic view of what’s happening to the overall Corvette market, but it does fit with some of the indicators we’ve seen and heard. I am a believer in trends so we’ll have to see if this continues with auctions that deal primarily with Corvettes. But this auction did have Corvettes for the collectors. The top selling Corvette was lot #S67, a 1967 Corvette Convertible called “The Roby Price Car”. The Big Block 427 ci/435 hp Corvette carries a Bloomington Gold certificate and was part of the Special Collection back in 1991. It is one of the best documented 1967 Corvettes in existence, with Top Flight Awards in 1989, 2002 and 2003. The Corvette sold for $467,250 with commission. The second highest-selling Corvette at the auction was a Riverside Red 1963 Corvette Coupe Z06 which sold for $367,500. This Corvette is 1 of 199 Z06 Coupes made in 1963 and has the rare (1 in 63) Big Tank option. There was another 1963 Corvette Z06 that sold for only $139,650. However, there was no write-up available on the Mecum site for this Corvette, and chances are it wasn’t a tanker like the other Z06. The two 1953 Corvettes also did very well, maintaining the pricing trend we’ve seen over the last year. Lot #S91, Chassis #107, has a Bloomington Gold certificate and has just 120 on it since restoration. It sold for $296,625. Lot #S53, which sold for $283,500 is Chassis #210 and has been housed in a climate controlled garage with the same owner for the last 13 years. Here are the SOLD results from the 2007 Bloomington Gold Auction:

Auction Results: 1953 Corvette Sells for $440,000

by Keith Cornett on June 11, 2007

1953 Corvette Roadster, Chassis number 157Our brothers at the Corvette Blog informed us last week about the McMullen Collection and a 1953 Corvette that was being auctioned on Saturday. We got the news today that the Corvette, chassis number 157, sold for an astounding $440,000 which includes the 10% buyers commission. The car was owned by John McMullen, a car dealer who owns a Pontiac GMC dealership in Troy, Michigan. McMullen, who is 79, had amassed a collection of 140 rare and valuable cars and decided that 73 of them must go. RM Auctions handled the gavel duty. Also included in the auction was a 1931 Duesenberg which sold for $1.35 million, a 1953 Buick Skylark and a 1953 Cadillac El Dorado which both sold for $450,000. The 1953 Corvette Roadster was acquired 12 years ago following a fresh restoration and a Gold certificate from Bloomington. The selling price shatters the $125,000 – $175,000 estimate listed on the RM Auction’s website and was much higher than the 1953 Corvette Roadster which sold at Barrett-Jackson in January for $298,350. It will be interesting to see if these prices will have any effect on the sales of two 1953 Corvette Roadsters at this weekend’s Bloomington Gold Auction.
