The builder of this hot mess that was once a C5 Corvette Convertible appears to have spared no expense in bringing his vision of the sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica to the roads of Istanbul, Turkey. With all that custom body work, the massive wing held down by 20 bolts, and the Zonda-style exhaust, the finishing touch is the Battlestar Galactia sticker on the rear. Now, if I remember the TV show correctly, Apollo and Starbuck flew “Vipers” but why get hung up on semantics. Those with weak constitutions or acid reflux issues should turn away now.
Fifty-Seven years ago today, an assistant staff engineer working for Chevrolet recognized the burgeoning hot rod market was made up of young men who invariably turned to Ford parts and accessories for performance. The engineer also deduced that once these men progressed in age and income, they would trade in their jalopies for used Fords and then for new Fords. For Chevrolet to be able to compete for these new performance-minded customers, the company’s anticipated V8 engines should also be made available with a ready line of engineered performance parts including cams, pistons and valves. And so the assistant staff engineer wrote a memo to his boss detailing this epiphany.

One of the highlights of Wednesday night’s Test Drive: Corvette on SPEED was the segment where NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson gets behind the wheel of Corvette Racing’s C6.R. Jimmie is no stranger to Corvettes, but from his comments while pacing the road course behind a stock 2011 Corvette ZR1 with show host Tommy Kendall, he is blown away by power and grip of the factory race car.
By now, most of you should be familiar with the Corvette Stingray Concept that was featured in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Last year the Stingray Concept hit the car show circuit which allowed the public the opportunity to take in the sleek, futuristic Corvette. Great, except for some reason it skipped the show in my hometown of Tampa. So when I saw it featured in an advertisement this weekend, I headed to the Convention center for my first opportunity to get up close and personal with Chevy’s popular Corvette concept.
Here’s musician/actor Rick Springfield running errands around Malibu in what looks to be a modified 1963 Corvette. That wide stance and thick rubber on the rear makes me think resto-mod. The passenger side mirror add-on is a nice touch too. Hmmm, Jessie’s girl or a ’63 Sting Ray?
NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson, NFL star running back DeAngelo Williams and Corvette Racing’s Johnny O’Connell will get behind the wheel of various Corvette models for the premiere of SPEED’s original series Test Drive. Hosted by Tommy Kendall, the Corvette test drives will take place on the streets surrounding Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C and Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP) in Kershaw S.C. The show airs next Wednesday, December 8th at 10:30 pm EST so get those DVR’s set. For a bit of a preview, check out the advance photos we got from SPEED.
We first came across Mark Shields (aka Super Genius) replica Corvette Batmobile in May 2006. A salvaged 1978 Corvette was used as the basis to create the one of kind tribute to Tim Burton’s 1989 reincarnation of the Dark Knight which featured Michael Keaton in the role of the caped crusader. The Corvette is now listed on eBay with a somewhat steep starting bid of $50,000.
The Rossi SixtySix and its designer David R paid a visit to Jay Leno’s garage for some quality time with the late night host. Longtime readers of CorvetteBlogger know of our affection for the retro-looking rebodied C6 that the Rossi SixtySix inspires. But now the SixtySix’s first real test comes from a passionate Corvette enthusiast whose collection focuses more on later model performance than classic midyear fiberglass.
