Madison, Alabama’s police department unveiled their latest weapon for combating crime and building community relations – a Torch Red Corvette Grand Sport Coupe. The Corvette was donated by Jeff and Nilmini Thompson, owners of Systems, Products and Solutions, to give back to their community.
They say that every legend has a beginning and that is certainly true of the Chevrolet Corvette. The first mass-produced fiberglass car made its public debut at the GM Motorama held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City on January 17, 1953. A crowd of 45,000 attendee’s saw Harley Earl’s Corvette dream car on opening day alone. The next day, Chevrolet announced the Corvette would enter production with 200-300 units of the 2-seater being made available to the public later that year.
A new commercial for Mountain Dew shot by Mouse McCoy and his Bandito Brothers production company features a C4 Corvette being “pipe-ramped” into a bullfighting ring. In the new spot, an obnoxious dude drives up to the arena and tosses his keys to a young man he assumes is a valet. Of course, the kid is not a valet and so he takes the Corvette on a joyride with culminates in a spectacular jump into the bullfighting arena. Trust me, its awesome!
In 2008, Jim M. Sweeney sought to register the trademark CORVOLTTE for “electric vehicles, namely, automobiles”. General Motors opposed the registration saying that it would cause confusion with its mark CORVETTE. The three-judge board ruled on December 10, 2010 in favor of GM, but in its decision the court rebuked the automaker saying they failed to provide proof of fame of its mark and also failed to submit properly into evidence its registration for the CORVETTE mark for “automobiles”.
A YouTube video showing Dee Albert Replogle driving 190 mph in his supercharged Corvette on Kilpatrick Turnpike in Oklahoma City served as all the evidence needed as Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers arrested the 30-year old on reckless driving charges. Troopers were able to trackdown Replogle who indicated that he was the owner and driver of the car as well as personally responsible for the YouTube account.
The builder of this hot mess that was once a C5 Corvette Convertible appears to have spared no expense in bringing his vision of the sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica to the roads of Istanbul, Turkey. With all that custom body work, the massive wing held down by 20 bolts, and the Zonda-style exhaust, the finishing touch is the Battlestar Galactia sticker on the rear. Now, if I remember the TV show correctly, Apollo and Starbuck flew “Vipers” but why get hung up on semantics. Those with weak constitutions or acid reflux issues should turn away now.
Fifty-Seven years ago today, an assistant staff engineer working for Chevrolet recognized the burgeoning hot rod market was made up of young men who invariably turned to Ford parts and accessories for performance. The engineer also deduced that once these men progressed in age and income, they would trade in their jalopies for used Fords and then for new Fords. For Chevrolet to be able to compete for these new performance-minded customers, the company’s anticipated V8 engines should also be made available with a ready line of engineered performance parts including cams, pistons and valves. And so the assistant staff engineer wrote a memo to his boss detailing this epiphany.

Jimmie is no stranger to Corvettes, but from his comments while pacing the road course behind a stock 2011 Corvette ZR1 with show host Tommy Kendall, he is blown away by power and grip of the factory race car.
