Weekend Plans: NCRS Corvette Show and Mecum Auction

by Keith Cornett on January 23, 2009

NCRS Winter Regional

Our bags are packed and reservations have been confirmed. We’ll be spending some quality time in Orlando, Florida this weekend as two of our favorite Corvette events have hit the Sunshine state: The NCRS Winter Regional and Mecum’s High Performance Auction.

At the Winter Regional, our favorite pastime is to walk the vendor and swap meet area. I’m on the hunt this year for the logo inset that is housed in the middle of the spinner on a 1966 Corvette hub cap. I’ve also been toying with the idea to go retro with my license plate. Florida DMV allows classic car owners to use actual license plates from years past so I am going to look for a clean 1966 Florida plate.

At the Mecum Auction, we of course will be there on Saturday afternoon for the sale of Gulf One, the 1963 Corvette Z06 race car. The Flying Dentist, Dr. Dick Thompson will there to watch his old car get sold. Bob McDorman will also be selling a few cars from his collection of celebrity-owned and low mileage Corvettes.

So if you see this guy walking around either event, make sure you come up and say hi. We’ll have photos and videos early next week when we return.

Vintage 1960 Corvette Poster

This vintage poster features five 1960 Corvette Roadsters driving in formation and poses the question: “For ten seconds try to imagine what owning a Corvette would be like…” As Corvette owners, we can agree with the answer: “You’re close, but it’s better than that!”

All Corvettes are Blacks

A new Corvette DVD called VetteCollections will be heading our way in 2009 and the show features an in-depth look at some of the coolest Corvette collections in the country. One of those collections highlighted is the Bill Mullis collection of Ashville, North Carolina. Featuring more than two dozen Corvettes spanning the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations and a sampling from the C5 and C6 generations, you will see all have one thing in common – they’re all black.

The Corvette collection starts with a Black 1954 and covers every succeeding year through 1968. Multiple body styles and powertrains make up the collection and Bill says only a Black 1965 Fuelie Coupe has eluded him to date.

If this segment is representative of all the segments on the forthcoming VetteCollections DVD then count me in for a copy. We’ll be watching the VetteCollections website for news of the release date and perhaps another promo will be released in the meantime.

Six Cool Products for Winterizing your Corvette

by Keith Cornett on December 19, 2008

Six Products and Accessories for Winterizing your Corvette

When I saw the snow that fell in Las Vegas, I realized winter was officially here and that many Corvette owners have parked their rides until Spring. The wicked weather also gave me the idea to call my friends at Ecklers Corvette Parts to find out what the six most popular parts and accessories for winterizing Corvettes are. If you are planning on storing your Corvette for any amount of time, this list is for you!

Aqua-Shed C6 Corvette Car Cover
No Corvette owner should be without a quality Corvette Cover. The Aqua-Shed Plush car cover features a 4-layer polypropylene construction for maximum protection in all weather conditions and it absorbs impacts better than any other car cover fabric to help protect the finish from nicks, dents and scratches.

Sta-Dri Moisture Protection Kit
Place the bags inside your Corvette and protect the interior by eliminating the undesirable effects of humidity, mold and mildew. Also protects against rusting and corrosion. Bags work at all temperatures and are ideal for protection during storage. Bags are non-corrosive, non-toxic and produce no dust.

Corvette Tire Storage Flat Stoppers
Cars that sit for months on end in one place flat spot tires, it’s a fact. You can prevent tire flat spotting with Flat Stoppers. Flat Stoppers go underneath your tires to insulate them from temperature extremes and the special lightweight polystyrene construction eliminates uneven pressure points regardless of how long your car sits. Use Flat Stoppers to put an end to ruining expensive tires.

CTEK 800 Battery Charger
You turn the key and nothing happens. Uh-oh, it’s a dead battery. If your Corvette is reserved for “pleasure driving” it may not be ready to go when you are. Here’s a safe and simple way to keep that from happening. Hook up a CTEK 800 Battery Charger available from Eckler’s to ensure your Corvette provides you with pleasure not disappointment.

Surf City Garage Wash, Wax & Detail Kit
All of the Surf City Garage products are specifically designed for use on fine classics and Performance Corvettes. This line of top-quality car care products was developed by a car guy just like you and me, and they are exactly what you would develop for your Corvette if you were able to custom design them for your own Corvette. Includes 8 Oz. Bottle Pacific Blue Wash & Wax, 8 Oz. Bottle Barrier Reef Carnabua Wax, 24 Oz. Spray Bottle Speed Demon Wax Detailer & Two Nano-Detailer Microfiber Polishing Cloths.

Wurth Rubber Care Gel Stick
Keeps rubber seals on doors, trunk and hood in good condition. The resilience of all rubber parts is maintained, increasing service life and preventing cracking. Freezing and drying in winter are effectively prevented. Eliminates squealing, creaking and other noises caused by dry rubber. Easy to use gel stick applicator restores rubber parts and revitalizes bumper & body side moldings.

If you don’t have your holiday shopping done yet for your favorite Corvette enthusiast, it’s not too late. When it comes to Corvette gifts and merchandise, Ecklers Corvette Parts is your holiday headquarters. Check out their full catalog online or request your free catalog now.

[VIDEO] Corvette Ad Watch: STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer

by Keith Cornett on December 8, 2008

STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer

As many of you have winterizing on the mind as temperatures drop and snowy weather looms, along comes a commercial from STA-BIL reminding you to add the fuel stabilizer product to keep fuel from breaking down and gumming up the engine. The ad features all the elements of a typical commercial: an obsessive owner Corvette owner Jack, the know-it-all neighbor Ned, and of course, a stunning C1-era Red Corvette roadster.

If you’ve seen the previous STA-BIL ads, you’ll know the vehicle owner never listens to the advice to add the fuel stabilizer. And like previous commercials, we’re left with the image of the Corvette not starting because ol’ Jack was such a hard head. When you store, start with STA-BIL!

As a side note, I checked my books to ascertain the correct year of the Corvette, but because of the angle and the reflection on the coves, I can’t tell if they are painted or not. So a little trivia question: If the coves were painted, what is the model year of this Corvette?

RIDEMAKERZ Corvette Lineup

Pratt & Miller has partnered with RIDEMAKERZ, the custom model car building experience for kids to launch a lineup of Corvette models based on the C6.R and the C6RS. The new models were introduced Friday at Pratt & Miller’s Corvette Racing headquarters. Corvette Racing’s Ron Fellows was on hand along with kids from the Detroit Academy of Arts and Science to build the very first models which were donated to underprivileged children.

The RIDEMAKERZ concept is often referred to as the “Build a Bear” for boys, but kids of all ages enjoy the custom car building experience. Once you select your body style, you can customize the look with wheels, engines, exhaust style as well as decide whether to add a battery powered remote control or a free wheel chassis for pushing.

The RIDEMAKERZ partnership with Pratt & Miller explains why the Corvette Racing team duct-taped a Corvette model to the hood of the Number 4 C6.R for a hot lap around Monterey’s Laguna Seca raceway back in October:

“We are excited and proud to announce the release of our latest customizable RIDE, the legendary Chevrolet Corvette,” says RIDEMAKERZ ZEO and Founder Larry Andreini. “The RZ ‘Vettes are not just any Corvettes; they are the ‘BadBoy’ Pratt & Miller built, Le Mans winning race car, C6.R, and the quarter-of-a-million dollar, street legal C6RS Super-Car. It’s an honor to make these models available so that kids, parents, and car enthusiasts alike can build and trick out their ultimate model Corvette.”

Doug Fehan, Program Manager for Corvette Racing adds, “General Motors doesn’t just let anybody build a model Corvette. The new Pratt & Miller C6.R and C6RS Corvette models from RIDEMAKERZ truly capture the soul and spirit of the Corvette. Beyond that, we like how RIDEMAKERZ provides a hands-on building experience that allows kids, and kids at heart, to make choices and be creative.”

The RIDEMAKERZ Corvettes are available at any of the 12 nationwide shopz or online at RIDEMAKERZ.com with prices starting at $29. The remote control unit adds $25 and accessories start at $2.50.

eBay Find of the Day: The Cheaparral Sucker Vette

by Keith Cornett on December 2, 2008

The Cheaparral Sucker Vette

Put together a group of crazy engineers, a totaled ’86 Corvette barn car and a challenge that most would walk away from and you’ve got the makings of a great story. The Cheaparral J2J “Sucker Vette” is the result of over 3,000 hours of hard work and advanced engineering skills and now it can be yours as the Corvette is being offered on eBay with proceeds benefitting the United Way.

A group of engineers at Proctor & Gamble got together and built this one of kind of custom Corvette to compete in the $2007 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge. The Challenge pits competitors in a number of events in a car that must cost less than $2,007.

The Cheaparral team found their 1986 Corvette parked in a nearby barn and purchased the wreck for $1,400. They then had to put their creative talents to work in keeping the costs to under the $2,007 spending limit. After the Corvette was made rode worthy and twin turbochargers were added for power, the engineers decided they needed a little something extra to give them more of an edge in the autocross competition.

The solution came in the form of an M1 Abrams tank cooling fan that was mounted in the passenger seat and powered by a snowmobile engine. The fan evacuates 10,000 cfm of air from underneath car which generates 1,000 lbs of downforce and allows the Corvette to pull 1.3g on a skidpad. The concept is similar to racing legend Jim Hall’s Chaparral 2J vaccum enhanced “sucker” car from the 1970 Can Am Racing series which served as inspiration for the Cheaparral “Sucker Vette”.

The Cheaparral team competed against 50 others at the Grassroots Motorsports Challenge in Gainsville, FL and won every category including the autocross, concourse, best-engineered award, top finishing team and the 2007 Challenge Overall Champion award.

Following the Challenge, the Sucker Vette has been featured in a number of magazines and at car shows including the Corvette Homecoming event in Bowling Green. The Cheaparral recently made a trip out to the west coast to Jay Leno’s garage where the noted auto enthusiast proclaimed the Corvette “cool”.

The ebay auction of the Cheaparral “Sucker Vette” will benefit the United Way of Greater Cincinnati. The Corvette features the signitures of Jay Leno and Jim Hall who both had the opportunity to give the “sucker Vette” a drive. Bidding started at the team’s investment of $2,007 and the auction runs through December 11th.

2nd Look: The Corvette C3R Retro Stingray

by Keith Cornett on December 1, 2008

C6 Based Retro Corvette C3R Stingray

Last month we took a look at the Corvette C3R Stingray, a computer rendering by Christian Cyrulewski that wrapped a modern day Corvette C6 with a new yet retro-inspired bodywork of a 1969 Corvette Stingray. Christian is back in the news with a second version of the C3R that features a few tweaks to the original rendering including lengthening the car to give it a more aggressive stance and flattening the rear deck.

The retro cues of a 1969 Corvette are of course all over the place, hence its name, but the new skin feels very modern as well. I’m not sure how the headlights will be pulled off as Christian says they are not pop-ups. The only other issue we believe to be a problem is the lack of access to the rear storage area from the removal of the rear storage hatch. However with this second group of renderings, I have become a certified fan of the C3R Stingray.

C6 Based Retro Corvette C3R Stingray C6 Based Retro Corvette C3R Stingray C6 Based Retro Corvette C3R Stingray

Here’s what Christian had to say about the newest version:

The changes were mostly on the rear end, I added a chamfer where the body meets the rear diffuser to visually lift the rear, I extended the rear about 25mm and narrowed it by more than 50mm to visually give it a more aggressive and planted stance. I also flattened the rear deck area and added a chamfer to the spoiler to match the profile of the 69 stingray better and also to give it a more modern look. The last change was to the front fender in front of the wheel, I added some fullness to give it better lead-in to the grill area.

The dimensions on the C3R are the same as the z06 except the length, my car is 4 inches longer. I also wanted to mention that the headlights are not pop-up, I don’t want to say right now how they work because I going to create an animation that shows the process. One of the main complaints was that people thought it was going to have the pop-up lights.

Now that the main surfaces are done I am going to focus on the details like if it is possible to have 69 style door handles and the possibility of moving the location of the fuel filler to the rear deck, again like the C3.

With General Motors in its current funk and no plans to update the current C6 Corvette body style until at least 2014, we’re hoping progress continues on the C3R Stingray and Christian will be able to bring his prototype to the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise as planned. Until then, we’ll just have to live vicariously through these awesome computer renderings.
