Lambo Doors on the Corvette Stingray Concept!

As we learned from GM Design Chief Ed Welburn’s introduction of the Corvette Stingray Concept at the Chicago Auto Show last week, there are actually two of the Corvette Stingray concepts in existence. One is the non-working styling “buck” seen on display at the Chicago auto show, the other is a running concept that appeared in the movies. Thanks to a movie set extra, we see the movie Corvette Stingray Concept comes equipped with Lambo-style doors.

Not that I’m opposed to Lambo doors on a Corvette. They are a very popular mod for the late model Corvette crowd and it’s a nice surprise seeing it come from the design studio. It shows the designers are watching the aftermarket and have picked up on the supercar “status symbol” vertical door trend.

We read that the movie set extra posted this and over 100 other behind-the-scenes photos that have since been removed after a request from Paramount Pictures. Who knows what other surprises may be lurking under the hood of the Corvette Stingray Concept.

1963 Corvette is World's Fastest Street Legal Car

Rod Saboury is used to making cars go fast, but his latest project tops them all. Taking seven years to build, the 1963 Corvette is a show car, street car and race car all rolled into one fiberglass body. And boy does this Corvette roll. During last summer’s Super Chevy show at Summit Motor Sports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, the 2,400 horsepower Sting Ray launched from zero to 60 mph in 1 second and crossed the quarter-mile mark in 6.95 seconds at 210.54 mph.

The ’63 is powered by a small-block Chevy V8 built by Moran Engines. Twin turbochargers boost the horsepower to 2,400 while 22-inch tires keep the Split-Window firmly planted to the pavement.

The Corvette is fully street legal and meets all the requirements to be registered for driving on the street. Creature comforts include power windows and cup holders. Street tires provide plenty of grip and Rod claims the car gets 10 miles to the gallon while running on pump gas.

People compare the twin-turbo Corvette with a jet being catapulted off an aircraft carrier. The Corvette is built for extreme acceleration. For his runs at the strip, Rod takes off in first gear which lifts the front tires off the track. He shifts into second gear at 8,200 RPM. Finishing a run at 210 MPH means the Corvette requires a half mile of breaking distance to stop. Twin parachutes mounted on the back to help slow the Corvette. The chutes create negative g-forces which Rod compares to slamming into a brick wall when they are deployed.

RIDEMAKERZ Corvette Lineup

Pratt & Miller has partnered with RIDEMAKERZ, the custom model car building experience for kids to launch a lineup of Corvette models based on the C6.R and the C6RS. The new models were introduced Friday at Pratt & Miller’s Corvette Racing headquarters. Corvette Racing’s Ron Fellows was on hand along with kids from the Detroit Academy of Arts and Science to build the very first models which were donated to underprivileged children.

The RIDEMAKERZ concept is often referred to as the “Build a Bear” for boys, but kids of all ages enjoy the custom car building experience. Once you select your body style, you can customize the look with wheels, engines, exhaust style as well as decide whether to add a battery powered remote control or a free wheel chassis for pushing.

The RIDEMAKERZ partnership with Pratt & Miller explains why the Corvette Racing team duct-taped a Corvette model to the hood of the Number 4 C6.R for a hot lap around Monterey’s Laguna Seca raceway back in October:

“We are excited and proud to announce the release of our latest customizable RIDE, the legendary Chevrolet Corvette,” says RIDEMAKERZ ZEO and Founder Larry Andreini. “The RZ ‘Vettes are not just any Corvettes; they are the ‘BadBoy’ Pratt & Miller built, Le Mans winning race car, C6.R, and the quarter-of-a-million dollar, street legal C6RS Super-Car. It’s an honor to make these models available so that kids, parents, and car enthusiasts alike can build and trick out their ultimate model Corvette.”

The Cheaparral Sucker Vette

Put together a group of crazy engineers, a totaled ’86 Corvette barn car and a challenge that most would walk away from and you’ve got the makings of a great story. The Cheaparral J2J “Sucker Vette” is the result of over 3,000 hours of hard work and advanced engineering skills and now it can be yours as the Corvette is being offered on eBay with proceeds benefitting the United Way.

A group of engineers at Proctor & Gamble got together and built this one of kind of custom Corvette to compete in the $2007 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge. The Challenge pits competitors in a number of events in a car that must cost less than $2,007.

The Cheaparral team found their 1986 Corvette parked in a nearby barn and purchased the wreck for $1,400. They then had to put their creative talents to work in keeping the costs to under the $2,007 spending limit. After the Corvette was made rode worthy and twin turbochargers were added for power, the engineers decided they needed a little something extra to give them more of an edge in the autocross competition.

The solution came in the form of an M1 Abrams tank cooling fan that was mounted in the passenger seat and powered by a snowmobile engine. The fan evacuates 10,000 cfm of air from underneath car which generates 1,000 lbs of downforce and allows the Corvette to pull 1.3g on a skidpad. The concept is similar to racing legend Jim Hall’s Chaparral 2J vaccum enhanced “sucker” car from the 1970 Can Am Racing series which served as inspiration for the Cheaparral “Sucker Vette”.

The Cheaparral team competed against 50 others at the Grassroots Motorsports Challenge in Gainsville, FL and won every category including the autocross, concourse, best-engineered award, top finishing team and the 2007 Challenge Overall Champion award.

Following the Challenge, the Sucker Vette has been featured in a number of magazines and at car shows including the Corvette Homecoming event in Bowling Green. The Cheaparral recently made a trip out to the west coast to Jay Leno’s garage where the noted auto enthusiast proclaimed the Corvette “cool”.

The ebay auction of the Cheaparral “Sucker Vette” will benefit the United Way of Greater Cincinnati. The Corvette features the signitures of Jay Leno and Jim Hall who both had the opportunity to give the “sucker Vette” a drive. Bidding started at the team’s investment of $2,007 and the auction runs through December 11th.

2nd Look: The Corvette C3R Retro Stingray

Last month we took a look at the Corvette C3R Stingray, a computer rendering by Christian Cyrulewski that wrapped a modern day Corvette C6 with a new yet retro-inspired bodywork of a 1969 Corvette Stingray. Christian is back in the news with a second version of the C3R that features a few tweaks to the original rendering including lengthening the car to give it a more aggressive stance and flattening the rear deck.

The retro cues of a 1969 Corvette are of course all over the place, hence its name, but the new skin feels very modern as well. I’m not sure how the headlights will be pulled off as Christian says they are not pop-ups. The only other issue we believe to be a problem is the lack of access to the rear storage area from the removal of the rear storage hatch. However with this second group of renderings, I have become a certified fan of the C3R Stingray.

Here’s what Christian had to say about the newest version:

The changes were mostly on the rear end, I added a chamfer where the body meets the rear diffuser to visually lift the rear, I extended the rear about 25mm and narrowed it by more than 50mm to visually give it a more aggressive and planted stance. I also flattened the rear deck area and added a chamfer to the spoiler to match the profile of the 69 stingray better and also to give it a more modern look. The last change was to the front fender in front of the wheel, I added some fullness to give it better lead-in to the grill area.

The dimensions on the C3R are the same as the z06 except the length, my car is 4 inches longer. I also wanted to mention that the headlights are not pop-up, I don’t want to say right now how they work because I going to create an animation that shows the process. One of the main complaints was that people thought it was going to have the pop-up lights.

Now that the main surfaces are done I am going to focus on the details like if it is possible to have 69 style door handles and the possibility of moving the location of the fuel filler to the rear deck, again like the C3.

With General Motors in its current funk and no plans to update the current C6 Corvette body style until at least 2014, we’re hoping progress continues on the C3R Stingray and Christian will be able to bring his prototype to the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise as planned. Until then, we’ll just have to live vicariously through these awesome computer renderings.

Custom 4-Door Corvette is Fun for the Whole Family

One of the curses, or blessings depending on your outlook is the fact that the Corvette is a 2-seat sports car. Room enough for you and a buddy or your significant other, but no more. Gene Swatek thought the Corvette should be a car that could be enjoyed by the whole family, so he custom built what I am sure is the world’s only 1987 four-door Corvette.

The father of four girls got the idea for the custom 4-seater after going to Corvette shows and wishing he could take more of his family. To create his 4-door sports car, Gene took a driver quality stock 1987 corvette and it in half. He made his own steel extension frame members to stretch the Corvette an additional 38 inches. The rear suicide doors were added as well as the rear leather seats and custom ground effects.

Gene says the Corvette took about 18 months to build and while he had plans to custom build a convertible top that could stretch over the extended passenger area, time got away from him and he never got around to doing it. According to Gene, the convertible is so much fun, who needs a top or windows anyways!

The FamilyVette II as its called is the second of Gene’s elongated Corvette creations, hence the II. His first FamilyVette was a red 1984 limo-styled Corvette made from 2/3′s of the front of one Corvette and 2/3′s of the rear from another. You can see more of his work at www.familyvettes.com.

The white 1987 Corvette is currently for sale with a listing on eBay but no bids have yet to have been laid on the custom car yet. The auction ends on November 18th and the starting bid is $12,000.

Let’s Go Retro: The Corvette C3R Stingray Renderings

Corvette Vaporware seems to be all the rage these days and those designs that incorporate the features of classic Corvettes always generate a ton of press. Now traveling on the intertubes at warp speed are the computer renderings by Christian Cyrulewski and his C6-based retro Corvette C3R.

The Corvette C3R Stingray is a C6 Corvette based on the classic design of the 1969 stingray, complete with vertical side vents and chrome bumpers. The rear of the C3R, from the cockpit to the taillights is almost a dead ringer of the ’69 Vette. Yet we like how the modern (and functional) influences were incorporated, particularly the Z06 rear brake ducts, giving the C3R a unique classic muscle car look with modern C6 performance.

There are not a lot of details about the C3R project other than the renderings and the notice that they are currently in the tooling development phase. TopSpeed reports that Christian is looking to have the C3R debut at the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit and rebody kits will be offered for sale if there is enough interest in the car.

I’ve noticed a trend with these computer-rendered Corvette sites that almost all will say that they will build it if there is interest. Based on what we have seen so far, the Corvette C3R is high on our list of customized Corvettes we’d most like to see offered and joins the likes of the Rossi 66 and the Fireblade.

Macon, Illinois based Street Rods Only specializes in building custom C1 Corvette resto-mods. This 1961 Corvette they are currently working on may be one of the most original trans-generational Corvette designs we’ve seen. Utilizing a 1961 Corvette body which features essentially the same duck-tail rear end of the C2 Corvette, the guys have customized a 1963 style split-window removable hard top to give the car a look that’s truly one of a kind.

The SEMA show is coming up in early November so this Custom Corvette should be nearing completion. We’ll check back to see if we can lay our hands on any completed photos once the car is finished.
