Rare 1955 Corvette Bubbletop Roadster to Be Auctioned By RM in Fort Lauderdale

RM Auctions is holding their Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale auction this weekend. Over 30 Corvettes are scheduled for the auction with some of the featured lots coming from the estate of automobile collector John O’Quinn. One of these is Lot #740, a 1955 Corvette roadster featuring one of the most unique aftermarket accessories ever made for the early C1 Corvettes: A removable “bubble top” hard top.

Corvette's Almost 4-Seater 1963 Split Window Coupe

If something doesn’t quite look right with this 1963 Corvette Coupe, you get a gold star! That’s because this was a prototype for a “four place” Corvette. That’s right, a Corvette with back seats! The idea came from Ed Cole who wondered if a four-place Corvette could rival the successful four-seat Thunderbird.

Wicked 1963 Corvette Grand Sport Recreation

I don’t refer to many Corvettes as “wicked” but I was flipping through eBay’s Corvette listings tonight and this serious-looking 1963 Corvette Grand Sport recreation caught my eye. Painted Silver with a Black stripe, the Grand Sport’s coupe body just rocks. Under the hood rocks too with a Chevrolet 464 crate engine mated to a 6-speed transmission.

Camaro’s Marketing Manger John Fitzpatrick was working the floor at the SEMA show last week when our Man in Vegas showed up. Fitzpatrick was gracious to give us a tour of the new Genuine Corvette Accessories on display. Showcasing many of the new accessories is a Cyber Gray 2010 Corvette Grand Sport Convertible outfitted with the Heritage package.

A special thanks for Berry Lowman for providing the video. Check him out here: @BerryLowman and @TeamHallnNass

[VIDEO] SEMA 2009: Ed Roth Tribute Corvette

This custom Corvette is billed as a tribute to the late Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, creator of the memorable Rat Fink character and a key player in the 1960′s custom/hot rod movement in Southern California. The converted C3 features an open engine bay and a bubble-top roof, and the rear end is, well, you just have to see it. The Corvette was spotted outside the Las Vegas Convention Center where it will be on display at the SEMA show this week. A walk-around video is after the jump.

[PICS] The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Goes Topless

by Keith Cornett on October 21, 2009

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Goes Topless

I guess the new Convertible Corvette Grand Sport is just too tame for some folks.

Here is a Velocity Yellow Corvette ZR1 that has gone topless. The pics were posted to Twitter, but I have no background info on the car or the conversion process. Obviously, the 638-hp Chevy supercar was on display at a car show somewhere. If you have any details, please share!

UPDATE

These pics date back to an August 8th car show in the Walmart parking lot in Harleysville, PA. Apparently, the owner bought the Corvette ZR1 and a yellow Corvette convertible donor car at the same time. He had a shop do the conversion which cut off the carbon fiber roof and then used parts off the convertible to complete the conversion.

There is no word on whether or not the frame was strengthened. As our commenters have pointed out, the aluminum frame wasn’t designed for a convertible body so he can expect some body flex. Most likely, this Corvette was built for show and will never see the track.

I’ve got to give the owner credit. Only one like it (for now)!

This Corvette Z06 was parked at the entrance of the Corvette Corral at last week’s Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. I had asked around for the owner but we never did hook up so details on this conversion are light at best. But obviously, the owner is a huge Corvette racing fan and his Z06 nearly replicates the look of the GT1 Corvette C6.Rs.

Green Interactive Hybrid System Corvette

Neohydro Technologies has perfected its twin turbo system for the C6 Corvette. While the usual performance benefits of a turbo system are present: 775 horsepower and 691 Ft-lb of torque, the real trick on this install is better fuel economy which raises the mileage standard to 40 mpg around town and 32 mpg on the highway.

Neohydro calls their revolutionary twin turbo system the “Green Interactive Hybrid System”. The company installs a patented rear-mounted turbo system and then gives it an advanced custom tune that increases the efficiency of the car. Neohydro claims their GIHS system will not only boost horsepower and fuel efficiency, but when purchased with a new GM vehicle, the GIHS system is covered under the full factory warranty.

While turbo charging is typically used to create more power, one of the benefits is that it also helps create more power with less effort. On the rear-mounted turbo install, the compressed air runs back to the intercooler and then into the engine. Neohydro claims rear-mounted turbo systems are superior to traditional engine-mounted systems because they are efficient, less intrusive, easier to install and are very reliable. The GIHS turbo systems are legal in all 50 states.

Corvette Magazine heard about the GIHS turbo Corvette and recently put the car through its paces. Corvette Magazine’s Editor Eric Gustafson said the Corvette is “very fast” and “its a very neat installation. It’s nice to get into an aftermarket modified car without the check engine light on.” Look for the full review to run in March 2010 issue which hits newsstands in January.
