Stingray TV Show Coming to DVD

by Keith Cornett on April 18, 2007

1965 Corvette Sting RayStingray, the NBC show from the mid 1980′s is returning later this year on DVD, according to producer Stephen J. Cannell’s website. The show starred Nick Mancuso as the mysterious Ray, who travels from place to place in his classic 1965 Corvette, fighting crime and helping people in trouble. He accepts no money for his help, only the promise of a favor which Ray will come and collect at some future date. The show aired on NBC from 1986-1987 and 23 episodes plus the 2-hour movie pilot were shot. I remember an episode where Ray was being pursued by a black helicopter with mini-guns and they shot out the tinted black rear window on Ray’s Corvette. It will be a real treat to see these episodes again, and just in time for Christmas!

Tom Cruise: Corvette Owner

by Keith Cornett on April 11, 2007

(Editor’s Note: Read in the style of Robin Leach, Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous) Hollywood super-couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes hit up L.A. eatery Mastro’s Steakhouse for a romantic evening out on Tuesday. The dressed-up pair arrived in style in Tom’s classic 1958 Silver Blue Corvette, which he drove. Tom, 44, and Katie, 28, spent over two hours in the restaurant, before heading back home.

Tom and Katie in their 1958 Corvette. Tom and Katie exit their 1958 Corvette. Celebrity bodyguard is the ultimate in anti-theft devices.
What I really like about these photos is the #3 shot with bodyguard. I would imagine the conversation was something like: Tom: “Hey, were going to grab a bite to eat. Stay and watch the car.”
Bodyguard: “It will be here when you return, sir. BTW, Sir. Do you think this suit makes me look fat?”
Tom: “Hell, no. you look good. Besides, the suit matches the Silver Coves. See you in a couple of hours.” Update:
Apparently, Tom had a little trouble starting the 1958 Corvette when leaving the restaurant. Surrounded by photogs, one in the crowd yells out “Mission Impossible”. See the video at TMZ.com

LS2 Corvette Engine Animation/Screensaver

by Keith Cornett on April 8, 2007

YouTube.com user gmijoe sent me a link to this really cool animation showing the assembly of the LS2 Corvette engine. As the engine is being assembled, it is rotated for the best view and parts “fly-in” and are bolted on. There is also a version that can be used as a screensaver as well.

Can You Design a SEMA Corvette?

by Keith Cornett on March 28, 2007

Fidanza 2006 Corvette Twin TurboAre you the next Larry Shinoda or John Cafaro? Luckily, you don’t have to be a world famous Corvette designer to participate in the Fidanza C6 TT design contest. But what you will need is some original style and your photoshop skills if you want to redesign their show Vette for the SEMA show. Fidanza, makers of flywheels, clutches and other performance parts, is looking for a new design for their 2006 Corvette Twin Turbo and they want you to come up with a new design. The only requirements are keeping the original Le Mans Blue exterior paint and the same aftermarket wheels, as well as adding their list of sponsors to the car. Winners will have their named placed on the car and will receive an 8×10 framed photo of the finished Corvette. The Corvette will be attending the SEMA and PRI shows. Deadline for photo submissions is April 9th. For more info, visit the Fidanza C6 Photochop Contest page.

Mike Yager of Mid America MotorworksMid America Motorwork’s founder Mike Yager was named one of the Top 50 North American Car Collectors according to Keith Martin’s Sport Car Market Magazine. Mike joins notable car collectors Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Keith Crain and Lee Herrington. The article appeared in the February 2007 issue of Sports Car Market. The Top 50 collectors were included “not based solely on size or value of collections, but on passion for and contribution to the car collecting hobby” according to Sports Car Market Magazine. Those chosen have “raised the profile of the collector car hobby, supported and participated in concours and shows, or made it a better, safer or more fulfilling pursuit for the rest of us.”

“I am very proud and honored to be included with such an esteemed group of collectors for whom I have the greatest respect for what they contribute to the collector car hobby.” said Mike Yager. He continues “Much of the pleasure I receive in collecting cars is sharing my knowledge and passion for Corvette and Aircooled VW with others”.
Mike Yager’s collection of Corvettes and VW’s can be seen on the Mid America Motorwork’s My Garage website.

Flickr Photo of the Day: Penny and Her 1958 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on March 16, 2007

Last night I found this wonderful photo and story of an 86 year old Corvette owner named Penny who daily drives a 1958 convertible. The photographer is also a neighbor who said the following about her subject:

“Penny is our 86 year old neighbor and friend. She is the most youthful 86 year old I’ve ever met and she drives a 1958 Corvette in mint condition which she bought new 48 years ago.” “I asked Penny if I could take photos of her with her beloved Corvette. She graciously agreed, and said, “It needs a new paint job, but so do I!” Penny is a lovely woman and a role model of what it can be like to be a senior young-at-heart.”

There are three photos in the Penny series and you can view them here and here. The comments are worth reading as well.

Rick Conti with a Velocity Yellow Z06 CorvetteFinally the cat is out of the bag. Last week Corvette Conti announced that his site would be down over the weekend for an overhaul. Soon rumors began to swirl that the Corvette sales specialist was leaving Ohio for greener pastures. Tuesday morning, finally ending the “irresponsible speculation” that Corvette owners are apparently famous for, Rick confirmed that he has left Spitzer Chevrolet in Cleveland to join one of the largest Chevrolet dealers in the Midwest, EVS Chevrolet in Random Lake, Wisconsin. The fact that this story has fueled a thread at Digital Corvettes that is nine pages long with people offering well wishes and promises for future Corvette purchases only confirms something I have believed in for some time now. Rick Conti is a Rock Star! You know you’re doing something right when you generate that kind of positive response when your day job is that of a car salesman. But Rick doesn’t just sell cars. He’s sells the dream. He cures the fever by leading the customer on a journey into the Corvette experience. Doubt me? Just take a look at his previous office. EVS Chevrolet is currently a sponsor on the Corvette Forum. It will be interesting to see if EVS tries to maintain a presence on both forums or just concentrate on one. A quick check of their inventory shows 33 Corvettes available so they definitely have the volume. Conti is already making waves in Wisconsin with last night’s announcement that EVS will be offering a change to win a Velocity Yellow Z06 Corvette. So congratulations Rick on the new home. I’m looking forward to reading the new CorvetteConti.com!

Dale Jr: Member of Corvette Lunatic Fringe

by Keith Cornett on March 12, 2007

Dale Jr with his 2005 CorvetteThe Lunatic Fringe is what the engineers and designers at Chevrolet call the Corvette enthusiast community, according to the book “All Corvettes Are Red” by James Schefter. In a recent conversation with Dale Earnhardt Jr, The Las Vegas Sun’s Brian Hilderbrand asks Dale about his street-legal rides. Dale Jr’s personal fleet of cars consists of a 2005 Chevy pickup, a brand new Corvette, three Camaros, two Suburbans, a ’64 Impala and a ’55 Bel Air. Oh, and he owns a Jeep Cherokee that he turned into an orange monster truck. His two favorites are the new Corvette and the 1967 Camaro. About the Corvette, Dale says “The brand-new Corvette is a great car. They’re really, really fast but lightweight. Chevrolet, as a company, finally built the baddest car they could. They had always stayed on the conservative side and they finally let their hair down a little bit with this car and I’m really proud of them for that.” Want to know the real reason Dale sold his Mini Cooper last year on eBay?
