One of My Favorite Corvette Photos

I was looking for a photo to use as an avatar for a new Corvette social network I recently joined and came across this photo of me in my 1966 Corvette. I was returning to Tampa from the 2003 NCRS Winter Regional in Kissimmee with my friend Chris trailing me in his C5 Corvette Coupe. It wasn’t until that night that I knew he took this shot of me comfortably cruising at 82 mph on Interstate 4.

Several years later I paid forward the favor when I came upon Charlie driving his 1965 Corvette convertible on I-95 in South Carolina. He was returning to South Florida from Deals Gap, NC where he and some friends had cruised the Tail of the Dragon. Although I didn’t have a HUD in the GMC Arcadia rental to document our speed, Charlie had about the same surprised reaction at seeing him in his Corvette as I did after I was able to track him down through the forums and send him the pictures.

Like Charlie, I drive my 1966 Corvette regularly (although not usually that far from home) and I think that’s one of the neatest aspects of this photo: Just me on the road in my ’66 Sting Ray with the wind whipping through the cockpit and my focus on the road ahead. Life should be that good everyday.

Long and Winding Road: Paul McCartney's Blue C5 Corvette

I’ve been a Beatles fan for about as long as I’ve been a Corvette fan – which means pretty much my entire life, so this is a fun story for me to tell you about. Former cute-one Paul McCartney keeps a C5 Corvette at his LA home and is often seen driving it when he is on the West Coast. Paul was recently spotted strolling through LAX with new GF Nancy Shevell and the couple was photographed leaving the airport in Paul’s C5 Blue Convertible.

I believe Paul has owned this particular Corvette for some time. I remember watching a special about the recording of the 2005 CD “Chaos and Creation in the Backyard” and at one point the video showed Paul arriving at the LA recording studio in the blue C5 convertible.

Think about that for a sec. McCartney is one of the richest entertainers in the world with a net worth estimated to be a BILLION dollars. He can afford any car he wants – yet he keeps an older C5 Corvette as his personal car when in California. I think that says a lot, not only about McCartney, but about the performance and quality of the C5 generation of Corvettes.

And since I’ve already gotten way off topic with this post, let me continue with a quick plug of Paul’s latest album “Electric Arguments”. If you’re a McCartney or Beatles fan and you don’t have this disc in your collection, you are missing out. It’s Paul’s best work in several years and it’s a great listen. Pictures From The NCRS Winter Regional Corvette Show

The 31st annual National Corvette Restorer Society’s Winter Regional meet in Kissimmee, Florida appears to have been successful based on our read of the crowd and some of the attendees and vendors we spoke with. Frost greeted the visitors early Friday morning, but by mid afternoon, temperatures reached the low ’70s. If you haven’t been to one of these larger Corvette shows, you are really missing out. Here some of what you would have seen.

For those of you wondering, I found a vintage 1966 Florida license plate that I am thinking about registering for my car. I’ll bolt in on in the couple of days just to see how it looks. It was in very good condition and I got it for $25. I did strike out though on the replacement spinner logo inset for my wheel covers, so my hunt continues.

I also hate pass along bad news, but there is more than one report of people stealing valuable parts like original oil and gas caps from Corvettes parked on the grounds, as well as a few vendors who found that people walked off with some parts without paying. Too bad that this happens in our great hobby that a guy has to worry about getting parts stolen off his Corvette when he is out for some fun and camaraderie.

Weekend Plans: NCRS Corvette Show and Mecum Auction

NCRS Winter Regional

Our bags are packed and reservations have been confirmed. We’ll be spending some quality time in Orlando, Florida this weekend as two of our favorite Corvette events have hit the Sunshine state: The NCRS Winter Regional and Mecum’s High Performance Auction.

At the Winter Regional, our favorite pastime is to walk the vendor and swap meet area. I’m on the hunt this year for the logo inset that is housed in the middle of the spinner on a 1966 Corvette hub cap. I’ve also been toying with the idea to go retro with my license plate. Florida DMV allows classic car owners to use actual license plates from years past so I am going to look for a clean 1966 Florida plate.

At the Mecum Auction, we of course will be there on Saturday afternoon for the sale of Gulf One, the 1963 Corvette Z06 race car. The Flying Dentist, Dr. Dick Thompson will there to watch his old car get sold. Bob McDorman will also be selling a few cars from his collection of celebrity-owned and low mileage Corvettes.

So if you see this guy walking around either event, make sure you come up and say hi. We’ll have photos and videos early next week when we return.

All Corvettes are Blacks

A new Corvette DVD called VetteCollections will be heading our way in 2009 and the show features an in-depth look at some of the coolest Corvette collections in the country. One of those collections highlighted is the Bill Mullis collection of Ashville, North Carolina. Featuring more than two dozen Corvettes spanning the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations and a sampling from the C5 and C6 generations, you will see all have one thing in common – they’re all black.

The Corvette collection starts with a Black 1954 and covers every succeeding year through 1968. Multiple body styles and powertrains make up the collection and Bill says only a Black 1965 Fuelie Coupe has eluded him to date.

If this segment is representative of all the segments on the forthcoming VetteCollections DVD then count me in for a copy. We’ll be watching the VetteCollections website for news of the release date and perhaps another promo will be released in the meantime.

Opportunity Rumbles Like a 427: Proteam Corvette Is For Sale

I received the monthly email from Proteam Corvettes and had to read the first paragraph three times to make sure it was saying what I thought it was. I still didn’t quite believe it so I fired off an email to Terry Michaelis and he confirmed what I read: Terry and his brother Fred are putting the world-renowned dealership and its collection of 200 classic Corvettes up for sale.

Terry says they’ve been kicking around the idea for several years and now they’ve made it official. That first paragraph stated the following:

Fred and I have been banging the sell idea around for several years and we feel confident that capable, informed and interested parties are right here in our database… well poised to acquire the ProTeam business and take it to the next level.

Proteam’s collection of classic Corvettes, many with NCRS Top Flight, Bloomington Gold and Triple Crown designations, is truly second to none. Terry is a well known fixture at all the classic Corvette and muscle car auctions and only bids on and buys the best cars. He also doesn’t let emotions get in the way and will pass on a Corvette if he feels the bid went higher than his target. Not seeing him working the paddock or sitting front row at a Mecum auction with that detached look on his face will take some time to get used to.

Let’s take a look at exactly is included in opportunity:

  • Inventory – The world’s largest collection of over 200 classic Corvettes, with many being beautifully restored to like-new condition and carrying prestigious honors such as the Bloomington Gold Certification, the coveted NCRS Top Flight award, and the Triple Crown designation.

It took all of a nanosecond to realize that my pockets are a little light to take advantage of this opportunity. The price needed to buy this world renowned Corvette dealership is undisclosed but if you’re interested in finding our more, here are the steps you’ll need to take:

  1. Indication of Interest – Email David Rupp with your indication of interest at rupp@mccannrupp.com
  2. Pre-Qualification – To pre-qualify, you must provide your credit references, your basic plan for funding a purchase of this magnitude, and your permission to discuss your funding capability with your banker or similar folks at the appropriate time.
  3. Confidentiality Agreement – Once you’re pre-qualified, you will be sent a confidentiality agreement.
  4. Information Packet & Bid Instructions – Subsequent to receiving your signed CA, Proteam will send you a detailed information packet on the company as well as further instructions regarding the bid submission process.

We’ll be following this story closely and will see if we can get any updates when we see Terry at Mecum’s Kissimmee Florida auction in January, assuming that the dealership hasn’t changed hands at that time.

This Corvette Z06 turned C6R replica looks to be the real deal until you get up close and view the interior. Making its debut at last year’s SEMA show, this ultimate tribute Corvette has returned to Las Vegas for SEMA 2008 and features the updated 2008 “Jake Scrape” livery which includes the new Compuware logo and black wheels. While we believe the best livery ever was the B-Pillar Jake on the 2007 Monterey Corvette C6Rs, we know this Corvette would be a hit at any of the ALMS Corvette corrals.

Bruce Willis' 1957 Corvette Roadster

The 1957 Corvette roadster owned by Bruce Willis was sold at the Bonhams & Butterfields’ California Classic auction on Saturday. The White/White convertible was hammered for a sale at $79,560 which included the undisclosed buyer’s commission. Bruce’s second Corvette in the auction was a 1967 Marlboro Maroon 427/435 Convertible that didn’t reach reserve and was unsold.

The 1957 Corvette was a gift to Bruce Willis from his ex-wife actress Demi Moore. Bruce had the non-standard Blue/White Corvette repainted to Polo White and upgraded the mechanicals by installing front disc brakes with a power booster and adding power steering. The Corvette came with the base 283 ci 220 hp V8 engine and it apparently is an original Radio Delete car.

Here is the description of the Bruce Willis 1957 Corvette from Bonhams & Butterfields:

The early Corvettes advanced steadily from the near-prototype hand built construction of the first 300 Corvettes in 1953, through their 3,640 successors in 1954, both with Blue Flame six-cylinder engines and Powerglide, through the first V-8 powered 1955 Roadsters of which only 700 were built.

1956 saw Corvette make a major evolution, becoming a true convertible with rollup windows. For the first time its distinctive fender side coves appeared. 1956 also brought Corvette’s first optional high performance engine. Described as “for racing purposes only”, its dual 4-barrel carburetors could be combined with RPO 449 high lift camshaft to deliver something like 240 brake horsepower from the little 265 cubic inch Chevy V-8. It was a harbinger of things to come.

Corvette fully matured in 1957 with a laundry list of 283 cubic inch engines and other performance options. There were five available engines, starting with the 220hp V-8 and ending, of course, with the famous 283/283 Fuelie engine. On April 9, 1957, just over half way through the year’s production, Corvette closed the last gap in its stature as a true sports car with the addition of the Borg-Warner T10 4-speed manual transmission to its options list.

Attesting to the success of the evolved Corvette concept and its execution was the year’s production, 6,339 cars, nearly double the 1956 total of only 3,467.

One of them was this base model Corvette which Demi Moore gave to Bruce Willis. It has had a thorough restoration and is still in sharp, near-showroom condition. A base 283 cubic inch, 220 horsepower car with Powerglide transmission, it was finished in Light Blue with White coves and White upholstery. Although it has a heater it is apparently an original radio delete car, as it has the factory blanking plate in the instrument panel cutout and no RF suppression shielding on the secondary ignition wires.

Bruce Willis then set out to give it some personalization, including installing disc front brakes with a power booster, power steering and radial tires (reproduction BFG Silvertown wide whitewalls) for better handling on 15” wheels with spinner wheel covers. The color combination was non-standard so Bruce entrusted it to the acknowledged experts at Performance Paint in Torrance, California to repaint it in a gorgeous nearly pure bone white color. It comes with both hard and soft tops, both in white to give it a consistent all-white presentation that is outstanding.

It is described as a sweet running Corvette in excellent overall running and driving condition and is ideal for cruising or weekend jaunts in the country. Its all-white presentation is dynamically different and will stand alone among any Corvette display.

If purists ask why it’s presented this way the response, “Because this is the way Bruce Willis wanted it,” is virtually guaranteed to start a conversation.

Elfi Arkus-Duntov: 1915-2008

If Zora Arkus-Duntov is considered the “Father of the Corvette”, then his wife Elfi was most certainly Corvette’s First Lady. The National Corvette Museum announced that Elfi Arkus-Duntov passed away on October 23, 2008 at St. John’s Hospital in Detroit. She had been hospitalized there for several weeks with a severe leg infection.

The former dancer from the Folies Bergere in Paris was 93 going on 19. Together, she and Zora personified the performance and allure of the early Corvettes. Even well into their years, the pair had an energy and spark that infected everyone around them. Now they can be together again.

Funeral arrangements are pending and additional information will be made available via the Museum. Elfi will be cremated and her ashes will be joined with Zora’s as part of the current tribute inside the Museum.
