Corvette Accidents, Crashes and Wrecks

Nothing breaks our heart more than to see a Corvette that was involved in an accident.

[VIDEO] NHRA Pro Modified Corvette Crashes, Driver Critical

by Keith Cornett on September 4, 2008

1963 Corvette Pro Modified Drag Car

NHRA Pro Modified driver Steve Engle was critically injured when his 1963 Corvette drag racer went out of control following a run at Saturday’s Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Witnesses said the run looked good at the beginning, but towards the end and traveling an estimated 230 mph, the car hooked hard and veered nearly head on into the left cement barrier, cracking a large portion of the wall.

Steve went into surgery on Sunday and according to his family, he sustained fractures in six cervical vertebrae and damage to his spinal cord.

Engel was participating in qualifying for the JEGS ProMod Challenge, an exhibition Series that holds rounds at select NHRA POWERade Series events.

Update:
We got sad news on Monday that Steve passed away. The following is a news release from the NHRA:

After showing significant signs of improvement in the past week, Pro Modified racer Steve Engel died suddenly at 5 p.m. Sunday in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Engel was involved in a serious one-car racing accident during the recent 54th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

Engel’s Diamond Heavy Haul Corvette went out of control near the top end of the track, and he impacted the retaining wall head-on. He was airlifted to Methodist Hospital where doctors discovered six broken vertebrae in his back. Two were fixed immediately, but then excess fluid developed in his lung; doctors had to wait to fix the other four. That procedure was done Friday, and physicians were diagnosing a long but full recovery.

The 49-year-old Engel is survived by his wife, Tonya, and his sons, Stevie and Michael.

“The entire Pro Mod community is in a state of shock right now,” fellow racer and Jegs ProMod Challenge organizer Troy Coughlin said. “We were all so optimistic after Friday’s report, and then we get this terrible news. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tonya and the boys.

“Steve was a great racer — he won his first event with us earlier this year in Bristol — but he was an even better person. He was a big man with a big heart, always anxious to share a few laughs and toast with a cold beer. He loved to race, and he dearly loved his friends at the track. He will be missed.”

A resident of Shandon, Ohio, Engel competed in 31 Jegs ProMod Challenge events in the past few years. He had one win and two runner-up finishes on his resume. Overall, Engel had been drag racing for 21 years, and he listed John Force as the racer he admired most.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Our prayers are with Steve and his family.

Take Out! Hertz Corvette ZHZ Wrecks Dallas Restaurant

by Keith Cornett on July 28, 2008

Corvette ZHZ Takes Out Dallas Restuarant

In what will no doubt be the first of many, a Hertz Rent-A-Car Corvette ZHZ was involved in a one car accident last week in Dallas, Texas. The unidentified driver lost control of the sports car around 11 am and the Corvette came to a stop in the patio eating area in front of the popular La Madeleine restaurant.

The Hertz Corvette ZHZ is distinctive for its Velocity Yellow exterior with the black hood and roof stripe. Hertz added the car to their “Fun Collection” lineup several months ago.

From the photos it appears the Corvette suffered significant damage to the body. An employee of the restaurant said the Corvette slammed into the building but that he didn’t think anyone was badly injured.

We’re hoping that the driver elected for full insurance coverage on the Corvette before turning off “Active Handling”.

1989 Corvette Destroyed by Fireworks

Chicago area resident Rich Szatkowski spent the 4th of July finishing the interior restoration of his prized 1989 Corvette: New seats, new carpet, new steering wheel and a new stereo. As he washed the carpet earlier in the day, he left the roof panel off so it could dry out properly. Unfortunately, a neighborhood firework found its way through the open roof, igniting the interior and destroying the Corvette.

The news gets even worse for Rich. Because the car was undergoing restoration and was not being driven, Rich did not have insurance on the Corvette.

Corvette Summer Dream Turns Into Nightmare

by Keith Cornett on February 5, 2008

I’m debating on filing this post under “Corvette Accidents” because something went terribly wrong during the restoration of this C3 Corvette. It looks like the beginnings of a Corvette Summer replica car, especially with the nose and the Chevy Bow-tie rearend. But for whatever reason, the customization was stopped and this Corvette was trailered to the NCRS Winter Regional in Kissimmee, Florida last month where it sat with a for sale sign: $2,500.00 OBO – With motor and trans”.

I took these photos around mid-morning and later that day I happened by and noticed the trailer was empty. I wonder if the buyer was a member of Jay Leno’s More money than brains club.

A homeowner in Hiawatha, Iowa heard a loud crash early Thursday morning and upon investigating, found a yellow C5 Corvette in their house. The car crashed through the wall of the split level home before coming to rest fully in the basement. The driver, 52 year old Lee Francis Brown was taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving.

More Photos Statement from Lance Miller:

Hi everyone, it’s been a VERY long day/night here at Carlisle. I saw this post and wanted to make sure everyone heard it from the “horses mouth”. I’d like to provide all the information that I’m aware of at this time about this evenings storm. There are already a lot of rumors spreading… hopefully this post will help clarify everything. There was a serious storm that hit Carlisle this evening. I’m not certain if it was a tornado at this point in time, I’ll let you know once I find out more info (I’ve heard wind gusts of up to 70mph). I can assure you it’s not exactly pretty right now (12:30 am) on our grounds. Fortunately we DID NOT HAVE ANY FATALITIES – the rumormill is rampid from what I’ve been hearing. There were 5 injuries that I’m aware of at this point. There were incredibly high winds and as you all know there are a lot of tents throughout the grounds – it’s not pretty. It will be business as usual tomorrow morning. Our staff did an incredible job, I’m thrilled to be a part of such a great team. It’s getting late, I just wanted to drop everyone a line prior to getting out of my office… I hope this message helps clarify everything. I’d be happy to share further info, but I’m exhausted after such a hot long day. Good evening, Lance
We’ve got a lot of friends up there. Let’s hope the weather clears up and everyone has a safe time at Carlisle.

Brakes Fail, Split-Window Corvette Lands on Wall

by Keith Cornett on July 27, 2007

1963 Split Window Corvette Lands on WallYesterday morning, Carl Sprague was backing out his Riverside Red 1963 Corvette Coupe out of the garage when suddenly he was taken for a ride he will never forget. The brakes failed, sending the split-window coupe down the sloping driveway and onto a front yard retaining wall. Luckily a friend with McGuyver-like skills suggested jacking up the back of the suspended Corvette and setting the chassis on planks, using a 4-wheel drive with a winch to slide the Corvette off the wall. According to the Fullerton, California resident, the plan worked and the only damage appears to be a minor scratch on the left panel.

Long Island Z06 Corvette Catches Fire

by Keith Cornett on November 5, 2006

A motorist heading home from work has a Red Corvette pass him on the right shoulder of the highway and realizes it is on fire. So he follows him to a Goodyear Tire Store where the Z06 owner jumps out and watches the flames consuming the Corvette right in front of him. The Goodyear guys attempt to put out the flames with fire extinguishers but the flames reappear. Then the fire department shows up and douses the Corvette with water to put out the fire for good. The Z06 owner said he was just driving when he heard something from underneath the car on the highway, but didn’t realize it was on fire until he exited the highway. He also mentioned that he just had a dealer-installed exhaust system added, which may have been the culprit.

Flying Car Wrecks Corvettes

by Keith Cornett on August 8, 2005

I find it amazing when searching some of the aggregator sites for Corvette news, all I can find are stories about how some guy dies while speeding in his Corvette. This blog will not be the place for these types of stories, but in some cases when a Corvette is involved in a spectacular crash, and nobody was injured, it may be worth commenting on.

And such is the story behind Pat and Mike Shannon, owners of a 1990 and 1995 Corvette, as well as a 1993 Cadillac Seville.

Imagine waking up and hearing a horrendous crash in the middle night and finding out that all three of your cars were destroyed by a drunk driver.

A New Paltz, NY man had left a party down the street from the Shannon house. He lost control of his car, drove up a lawn and went airborne with his car over a steep dropoff.

Getting air for at least 15 feet, his car landed on top of all three vehicles the Shannon’s owned, a 1993 Cadillac Seville, a blue 1990 Corvette and a red 1995 Corvette. The impact pushed the Cadillac into the SShannon’s garage.

The Shannons had purchased the red Corvette only two months earlier. They had made arrangements to sell the blue Corvette, and the buyer was scheduled to arrive in a few days to complete the purchase.
