Corvette ZR1 and the Camaro SS

Here is the 2009 Corvette ZR1 joining her much anticipated sibling, the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS for a few laps around the track. The video shows the Camaro SS first and then is joined by the Corvette ZR1.

The video is raw though and when the two cars are shown together, the sound goes blank. Zero, Nada. Time for a voiceover? Maybe that silence is a good thing considering the sound emanating from the 6.2L LS3 V8 Camaro SS is a little lame. But with the starting price of the SS anticipated to be around $30,000, you’ll have a few dollars left over to add a Corsa exhaust system.

This is the second time in recent memory that we’ve seen the Corvette paired with a new Chevy car, the other being the Cobalt. Like that commercial, the Corvette is the scene stealer, especially in closing seconds as you’ll see. While some are wondering if the new Camaro SS will siphon sales from the Corvette, it’s important to remember that the Corvette is a Corvette and the Camaro SS, well, isn’t.

2009 Corvette ZR1 on the Autobahn

Dutch automotive site Autoblog.nl rides along with GM engineer and test driver Patrick Herrmann as they shakedown the very first European 2009 Corvette ZR1 on the autobahn. Before Patrick goes full throttle, we see him checking all the fluids and air pressure, as well as the DIC readouts once the Corvette is warmed up. Then all hell breaks loose as Patrick unleashes the 6.2L supercharged Corvette ZR1 on the autobahn, easily reaching speeds up to 310 kph or 192 miles per hour.

Usually we just share the video and you can watch it here in the wonderfully crappy youtube format. But for this drive, we recommend visiting Autoblog.nl where you’ll be able to see the Corvette ZR1 presented in widescreen HD glory. Oh, and when Patrick’s ready to start the Corvette for the very first time, you will want to have your speakers volume set to 10. This is one awesome ride!

We also grabbed some frames as the Velocity Yellow Corvette makes for some great eye candy. Besides, American’s aren’t used to see a speedometer that goes up to 330 kph.

Only 70 Corvette ZR1s are expected to be exported to Europe this year. Dutch importer Kroymans, the company that handles the sales of Corvettes in Europe, has set the price for the new 2009 Corvette ZR1 at 136,000 Euros. At current exchange rates, that translates to over $214,000 US Dollars.

Bondurant Driving School Adding 2009 Corvette ZR1 to Fleet

Want to drive the 638-hp 2009 Corvette ZR1 but are have trouble coming up with the $105,000 entry fee? The Bondurant School of High Performance Driving is adding at least one of the new supercharged Corvettes to its fleet of Corvettes as part of its 2-day ZR1 Driving Course. The new top of the line Corvette is expected to be at the school’s Phoenix facility in late September.

The ZR1 Control Course is one of the benefits buyers receive when they purchase the new Corvette. The 2-Day Corvette ZR1 Driving Course is offered for free to new Corvette ZR1 owners. Non-ZR1 owners can also take the course, which is expected to run $3395.

Drivers will first start out in seat of the regular Corvette C6 Coupe before moving up to the high performance Z06 and then the ZR1. Bondurant’s students spend 80% of their time at the school on the track and the student to instructor ratio of 3:1 will ensure that participants will come away from the track with a positive experience.

GM Delaying Corvette ZR1 Deliveries For Quality Assurance

After each new Corvette ZR1 rolls off the assembly line in Bowling Green, it undergoes what is being billed as “extreme quality control” in an attempt to deliver the car to customers as problem free as possible. While some are looking at the delay as a negative, Corvette Product Marketing Manager Harlan Charles tells us that this is just to make sure the ZR1s are as perfect as possible for everyone.

Harlan says this intensive scrutiny of early production Corvettes is part of the normal quality process that GM does with each new Corvette model introduction. They did it with first C6 Corvettes and they did when the new Corvette Z06 was introduced.

There is no denying that the delay is causing angst among some new owners who know that their new Corvette ZR1 has been built, but has yet to leave Bowling Green. We checked around and have been told that other than Dave Ressler who picked up the very first Corvette ZR1 last month, no cars have been delivered to retail customers.

That doesn’t mean the factory isn’t shipping the new supercharged Corvette. Truckloads of Corvette ZR1s have been sent to Detroit but these are captured test fleet cars and not assigned to customers. Those fleet Corvette ZR1s are being driven and evaluated to ensure that the quality Corvette owners have come to expect is represented on the newest Corvette.

Our opinion is that the attention to quality is a good thing as long as the delay doesn’t go on too much longer. We are feeling for those owners with the low VINs whose cars have been on the ground for a while. People aren’t used to paying $105,000 to $150,000 for a Corvette so making sure that it’s as perfect as possible and lives up to the hype makes good business sense.

The new 2009 Corvette ZR1s are coming. Harlan tells us it’s an awesome car and it’s worth waiting just a little bit more.

A Corvette ZR1 at the Milford Test Track

At 12:01 am this morning, the embargo was lifted and those lucky magazine and blogger stiffs who were invited by GM to the Milford test track (also known as the Lutzring) were free to post their experiences of driving the new 638 hp supercharged Corvette ZR1. And what a drive it must be. The four reviews that we link to after the jump toss around short missives like “best ever” and “total pussycat”. Taking a poll of the reviewers found that they were “surprised”, “shocked” and “blown away” by the driving experience the new Corvette ZR1 delivers, not only on the test track, but on the public roads as well.

The 2009 Corvette ZR1 is the best car ever made. It redefines what performance cars are capable of, not by its numbers (the 0-to-60 in 3.3 seconds and a 205 MPH top speed figures are no longer noteworthy north of $100,000), but by how it makes those numbers so accessible. Simply put, the ZR1′s most remarkable achievement is how easy and unintimidating the chassis makes exploiting the car’s 638 HP.

The ZR1 may well be the best supercar bargain in the world, while at the same time being as mechanically sophisticated as any of the best supercars from Europe or Asia. Unlike most engines, the ZR1 doesn’t really have a torque curve. It’s more like an electric motor — massive torque is everywhere. In fact, it has so much twist you almost don’t need shift. Put the gear lever in third and roll on the throttle until you’ve accumulated enough speed as your license can tolerate and then lay on the brakes as hard as you please.

Okay, so we’re shocked (and more than a little proud) that America’s sports car established a lap-record at the Nurburgring. We’re awed by its high handling limits and overall tractability. And 15 or 20 hot laps of a circuit like the Lutzring could probably convince any skeptic that $30K worth of hardware value has been added to the already impressive Z06.

Possibly the only thing more surprising than the existence of a $100,000-plus, 638-horsepower factory-built Corvette is that the car is a total pussycat. Don’t get us wrong, this 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 can kill you quite completely dead. We mean like augured-in, test-pilot kind of beyond-recognition dead. It is capable of such stunning velocity in such a short distance that if things go wrong at even a fraction of its ultimate speed, it’ll tear a ragged hole in just about whatever it encounters.

The Jalopnik test drive article was our favorite review of the four and should be read first. Reviewer Wes Siler approaches the Corvette ZR1 drive from an enthusiast’s point of view and really takes you inside the emotions of driving Chevrolet’s new supercharged 638 horsepower halo car.

The only downside we read from the reviews is the same tired old argument about the interior not being on par with cars costing 2-3x as much. As with every new Corvette introduction we prefer to challenge these statements by spinning it as part of the “Chevrolet” experience. Who buys a Corvette for the interior anyway?

A Corvette ZR1 on the Assembly Line

Todd Schnitt usually discusses news, politics and other events including severe weather on his nationally syndicated radio show that’s based out of Tampa. As a Corvette Z06 owner, Schnitt casually mentioned a couple months ago that he was going to be getting a 2009 Corvette ZR1. On Yesterday’s show, he announced that his Cyber Grey Corvette ZR1 was on the production line and that photos of the car’s assembly were provided by a friend at GM.

Here are some photos of the ZR1 on day 1 on production. The assembly process usually takes two days and photos of the Corvette on day 2 are said to be coming.

As Todd was talking about his Corvette ZR1, he received a call from a guy listening on XM who said he was in Bowling Green to pick up his Atomic Orange ZR1 on Thursday. I emailed Todd and asked if he had opted for Museum delivery and he replied that he was taking delivery from a local Chevy dealer.

Now that the new King of the Hill has arrived, we are slowly making our way down the list of “Things to do in Corvette ZR1″. Let’s recap: Sell for $1 Million at Barrett-Jackson? Check! Kick the Nissan GT-R’s ass on the Nurburgring? Check! Do a 100 yard burnout on the Milford test track? Check!

Our friends at Autoblog captured a Red Devil putting the rubber to road twice in front of cameras. The ZR1′s supercharged 638 horses were begging to be let loose while the huge Brembo 15.5 inch carbon-ceramic brakes makes sure that it didn’t. Truly a spectacle that only a car enthusiast could appreciate.

So what’s next on our “Things to Do in a Corvette ZR1″ list? One word: Dyno!

The 2009 Corvette ZR1

We know they like to do things big in Texas, but one Chevrolet dealer in Houston has gone all out by pricing a 2009 Corvette ZR1 on eBay for $185,000. With a retail price listed at $115,000 with options, that’s $70,000 over MRSP. We’re trying to call in to Suze Orman’s show for her advice but I have a feeling I’d hear that shrill voice scream out “I Don’t Think So!”

Mac Haik Chevrolet has the 2009 Corvette ZR1 listed on ebay until April 14th with a “Buy It Now” price. The description says the Corvette will be delivered to the dealer in mid-September and the color is black on black. Since the MSRP is listed at $115,000 we’re assuming it has premium 3ZR option package.

Mac Haik Chevrolet isn’t alone in agressively pricing their 2009 Corvette ZR1s for ebay. Two other Texas dealerships have their ZR1s listed at prices above $150,000 as well. Frank Parra Autoplex has one listed for $167,000 while Don Hewkett Chevrolet has their “buy it now” priced at $158,000.

Dealers are certainly entitled to sell the Corvette ZR1 for what they think they can get for it, however when going the eBay route we prefer to see pricing starting at MSRP and then let the market set the sales price. Dealers can still protect themselves with a reserve. However, this process of super high “buy-it-now” take-it-or-leave-it pricing is a bit unseemly and reinforces the “we’re out to screw consumers” image that most dealers work so hard to avoid.

Jut my two cents. I could be wrong…

The Suze Orman Show

Flipping through the channels over the weekend, I came across this little gem on a cable tv show. A viewer named Dan calls into The Suze Orman Show on CNBC and asks the financial diva if he can afford to buy the 2009 Corvette ZR1. In this same segment, Orman approves a $6,000 ring and a pair of $900 high heel shoes so why not grant Dan “the man” his dream car? But before Judge Orman rules, Dan has to present an overview of his finances. Watch the video after the jump.

Dan, seriously…calling into a financial talk show and asking permission to buy your dream car? Do what you want to do, and good luck finding a Corvette ZR1 at $120,000.

Europeans To Pay Over $214,000 for a 2009 Corvette ZR1

If you are in the market for Corvette ZR1, be thankful you live in the States where the new King of the Hill will retail for $105,000. Yes, we know dealers are adding upwards of $50,000 to the price of each new ZR1, but even at $150,000 its still a bargain compared to the recently announced European sticker price that effectly doubles the price of the ZR1.

Dutch importer Kroymans, the company that handles the sales of Corvettes in Europe, has set the price for the new 2009 Corvette ZR1 at 136,000 Euros. At current exchange rates, that translates into $214,146.64 US Dollars. As in the US, buyers will be treated to a driver’s training course that’s included in the price. “There is a huge demand for this car,” Kroymans spokesman Dick Braakhekke said. “It offers great performance at a relatively low price.”

Only 70 Corvette ZR1s are expected to be exported to Europe this year and only 150 Corvette ZR1s are targeted for during the full 2009 model year. Out of an expected model year run of 2,000 units, that’s a very small percentage. Last year 1,244 Corvettes were sold in Europe.
