Chevy to Build Corvette ZR1's LS9 Engine Live at SEMA

This summer Chevrolet unveiled a new program for Corvette buyers called the Corvette Engine Build Experience. For a cool $5,800, the program allows a Corvette buyer to assemble the LS7 or LS9 engine that will be installed in his Corvette Z06 or ZR1. To help promote the program, Chevy will be taking the Performance Build Center on the road to SEMA where one of GM’s skilled engine builders will assemble the Corvette ZR1′s 638 horsepower engine live from the floor of this year’s SEMA show.

When the Corvette ZR1 was first introduced to the public in 2008, one of the features causing a huge buzz in the automotive world was the exposed carbon fiber roof and the very expensive UV-resistant clear coat (said to cost $60,000 per gallon) that keeps the carbon fiber from cracking and yellowing in the sun. In this video, Corvette engineer Mark Voss talks about that clear coat covering that acts like a sunscreen to protect the panel for the life of the car.

Motor Trend Compares Corvette ZR1 with Porsche 911

Motor Trend’s Jonny Lieberman takes the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Corvette ZR1 out to Willow Springs Raceway and the Mojave Spaceport’s 12,000-foot runway and put both cars through a lineup of instrumented tests. The wheelman for the tests was 24 Hours of Le Mans winner and GT2 world champion Justin Bell. Both cars excelled in different parts of the test but one of the cars broke and was unable to run the standing mile. Lastly, Bell is the first race car driver I’ve seen to really play with the Corvette ZR1′s Performance Traction Management System. Can it make a professional driver better? Back in July while responding to a domestic dispute call, Taylor Michigan police corporal Matthew Edwards was tragically gunned down in the line of duty. The former Police Officer of the Year leaves behind a wife and two children. Taylor Chevrolet, the local Chevy dealer in the community has stepped up to offer a Corvette ZR1 which will be raffled with the proceeds to help the family.

Earlier this week, radio host Todd Schnitt became the first consumer to participate in the Corvette Engine Build Experience which allowed him to assemble his own engine that will then be installed in his new 2011 Corvette ZR1 at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. Here is a video of Schnitt assembling his supercharged 638-horsepower engine and some of his comments regarding the engine build program.

An employee of Manheim’s Dallas auto auction has been found out as the guy who took a Corvette ZR1 for a quick spin in a parking lot, with burnouts and power slides part of the non-inspiring repertoire. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t his car and he didn’t have permission and now the dealer that took possession of the ZR1 is demanding his arrest. The last time we spoke of Todd Schnitt, his 2009 Corvette ZR1 was on the assembly line in Bowling Green and he was sharing photos of the assembly process with his listening audience. Schnitt makes our Corvette news again, but this time its because of an option he ordered for his new 2011 Corvette ZR1 – The Corvette Engine Build Experience. Next week, Todd becomes be the first customer in Corvette history to build his own engine for his 2011 ZR1.
