Someone will definitely soon become the new owner of a 1953 Corvette, set to be auctioned off at no reserve during the Vicari Auction in New Orleans at the Pontchartrain Center on Aug. 24-25.
While each of the 300 Corvettes made during the 1953 model year is special, this one has the cherry on top, so to speak, because chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov signed the fender and dash at some point. In fact, a photo of the blessed event with “The Father of the Corvette” is even included with this Corvette, the 268th ever produced.
This car, one of just 220 ’53 models still believed to exist, has covered only 45,763 miles during its 65-year existence and still comes the only way they did back then – Polo White exterior over red interior with a black top.
The documentation is outstanding, with the history traced back to the mid-1970s when Harvey F. Wimmer, a respected early Corvette specialist from Pennsylvania, bought this 1953 classic. His full, body-off, concours-quality restoration is fully documented in photographs that will be included with the sale. After the restoration, the car went to several shows and earned an AACA National Senior First Prize in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 1984. Current owner Hubert Humphrey has kept the car in a climate-controlled private showroom since buying it in 2001.
In addition to the Zora autograph, the car also was featured on the cover of the June 1986 issue of Cars & Parts magazine, and the new owner will get a copy. Interestingly, the custom license plate on the front of the car, as seen in the magazine 32 years ago, is still in place.
