As the prototype C8 Mid-Engine Corvettes continue to be tested, the auto magazines are doing their part for building up hype by offering their hot takes on the next generation sports car from Chevrolet.

The latest comes from Automobile who featured these new renders in the “New and Future” issue which just hit newsstands this week (Sept/Oct 2018). Click here to see the new renders by Andrew Avarvarii at Automobile Magazine.

The renders themselves seem to be a mashup of C7 design cues on a mid-engine platform. The rear fascia with the C7 lights makes the car look so 2014 and previous CAD leaks seem to support the idea of a wrap-around corner design. I do like how the side scoops give their C8 a very aggressive look. Keep in mind that these renders are an artists opinion and we’ll have to wait until the real thing is revealed to find out how accurate they may be.

The article featuring the Automobile renders doesn’t really break any new ground for those that have been following the Mid-Engine developments over the last couple of years.

Perhaps the most sensational claim is that the magazine thinks the base price of the C8 Mid-Engine Corvette will be “near the current C7 Corvette’s roughly $57,000”. We think a starting price in the neighborhood of $60,000 would go along way to ensuring that those that love and support the previous generation Corvettes are not priced out of the new Corvette market.

The mag says the current C7’s LT1 will act as the base engine with an increase of power to around 500-hp. Automobile says a DOHC 5.5-liter V8 making over 600 horses and another making 800-hp are planned, as well as an ‘E-Ray’ performance hybrid that adds electric motors powering the front wheels for 1,000 horsepower!

Automobile also claims that the planned DOHC 5.5 liter V8s will be similar to Cadillac’s new 4.2 liter V8 – both of which will be built at the Performance Build Center inside the Bowling Green assembly plant.

The magazine had previously said that the mid-engine Corvette would be introduced earlier this year at the 2018 North American International Auto Show. Calling that prediction “a little optimistic”, they now are saying to watch for it at the 2019 NAIAS in Detroit.

As we are talking future product, the article mentions the 2019 Camaro which received some design updates this year consisting of new front and rear fascias and LED lightings, and the new Chevy Blazer, which sadly isn’t getting a V8 performance version (as of now).

  1. Too European for my liking. I love the traditional long sleek front end with the shorty tail end with the iconic round taillights on a Corvette.

  2. BETWEEN the front and rear, the stingray, mantaray,Corvette cabin is there ! THE SHARK NOSE is on the LIFESTYLE rendering, and I miss the lights and quad exhaust !
