Hendrick Motorsports Sends NASCAR Drivers to Spring Mountain and the Ron Fellows Driving School

High-performance driving is a skill that is learned like any other sport. The more you train, the better you can handle all the different situations that come at you while behind the wheel. Even for those drivers at the top of their game, continuous training makes sure those skills don’t diminish.

And speaking of pro drivers, our friends at Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club were busy last week offering an exclusive class with driving instruction to the NASCAR drivers of Hendrick Motorsports.

The drivers that came to Spring Mountain included Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus, Chase Elliott, William Bryon, Alex Bowman, Greg Ives, Alan Gustafson, and Darien Grubb.

Most of these drivers have specialized in oval racing over the years, but the NASCAR schedule does throw a few road courses in the mix every year. The instructors at Spring Mountain used the visit to the world-class track as a way to tune up the driver’s road racing skills, or as Ron Fellows puts it, help them with “turning right”:

“Most of these guys grew up oval track racing and the idea here is to get them thinking about what they need to be doing on a road course different than oval racing where there’s different corner speeds, there’s downshifting involved, predominately braking in a straight line, and again it’s really about the discipline and finesse involved in road racing, and we make sure that Jimmy, Alex, William and Chase get a little bit more comfortable with turning right.”

Even though these guys are professional drivers, watching them in the classroom setting with Spring Mountain Instructor Tom Lovelady taking them through the course will be like deja-vu to any of you who have also taken the Corvette Owners School at Spring Mountain.

If you haven’t been to Spring Mountain, there is still time to take advantage of their summer promotion which includes a 2-night stay in one of their luxury condos, a dinner for two and a 16gb SDHC card for capturing all the action on the Corvette’s Performance Data Recorder. The two-day schools start at just $1,000 with a valid VIN. Call 800-831-6891 to schedule your session today!
