The driver of a 1962 Corvette was critically injured when his car crashed Saturday night near Antioch, a small town midway between Chicago and Milwaukee in the northeast corner of Illinois.

The name of the 51-year-old driver has not been released, but the Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported that the black-over-red Corvette left the road near a curve and came to a stop in a ditch as it was headed west on Grass Lake Road.

Photos from the scene show the 1962 Corvette suffered severe damage to the front end, with virtually none of the body panels still intact from the seats forward and the engine sitting at a 45 degree angle pushed into the cabin.

Rescue crews rushed the driver, who was thrown out of the car, to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was listed in critical condition.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit is still investigating the crash, which happened shortly after 8 p.m. off Grass Lake Road west of Bluff Lake Road.
