1968 Corvette L88 Sunray-DX Racer Headed to Worldwide Auctioneers' Monterey Sale

One of the most successful and highly documented C3 racecars in history will go on the auction block at The Pacific Grove Auction on the Monterey Peninsula on Thursday, Aug. 17, with Worldwide Auctioneers in charge of the action.

This 1968 Corvette L88 Sunray-DX race car is expected to bring $950,000 to $1.25 million, according to the auction company.

That wouldn’t be a surprise considering how successful this car was in the 1960s, the level of restoration it has undergone, and the stack of impressive awards it’s received since.

A little background on the car’s origins:

It’s known as the “showroom” car to L-88 historians because when the factory L-88 car that legendary racer Don Yenko had ordered for the 1968 Daytona 24-Hour race, he grabbed a Rally Red L-71 427/435 hardtop convertible off his showroom floor and transformed it into an L-88.

What a run this car would go on to have!

It finished second in class in the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona (in between two other Yenko Sunray-DX cars, the class-winning 1967 L-88 and another 1968 L-88), set a GT-class lap record in the 1968 Sebring 12 Hours, and won the 1968 SCCA Midwest Division road-racing title.

A subsequent owner raced the car in the 1970s and ‘80s, and then in 2008, restoration expert Kevin MacKay of Corvette Repair in Valley Stream, N.Y., brought it back to its 1968 glory. Since then, it has received the coveted NCRS American Heritage Award representing the Corvette racing legacy, including verification that this is the real car and chassis that raced in 1968. It’s also been inducted into the prestigious Bloomington Gold Special Collection.

The new owner will receive a thick binder with full ownership history, the NCRS Shipping Data Report, NCRS Award Verification Letter, and all original paperwork from new, including Sunray-DX correspondence.

The auction company calls this car “one of the most historically significant and well-verified of all C3 Corvette racecars in existence and available,” adding that it is “truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity.”
