Chevrolet Advertising Agency Wins Awards for Prince Tribute Ad

While most of the world was stunned upon hearing about the sudden passing of the artist known as Prince on April 21st this year, Chevrolet’s advertising agency in Detroit, Commonwealth//McCann, jumped into action and produced a Prince tribute ad that ran on social media and in six major newspapers the following morning.

The ad was simple, featuring a black background with the back of a red 1963 Corvette split window while above in white letters saying “Baby, that was much too fast.” along with years that Prince was alive, 1958-2016.

Last week, that ad earned honors at the Adcraft Club of Detroit’s 2016 D Show for overall Best Ad of the Year as well as two additional “best of” awards for print and social media.

“It’s close to a perfect ad. It’s simple. It’s pure. It’s beautiful,” said Michelle Rossow, executive director of Adcraft Club of Detroit and the Adcraft Foundation. “It was a fitting way for a brand to pay tribute to a global icon like Prince.”

Since the song first appeared in 1982, Little Red Corvette has been the unofficial anthem for red Corvette owners everywhere so it was great to see Chevrolet paying homage to Prince using the iconic imagery of the red ’63 split window.

An independent panel of 15 national and international judges reviewed over 600 ads before naming the Prince tribute ad as their favorite.
