Witnesses told authorities that a black Corvette and a silver Infiniti were drag racing in the 3900 block of Thousand Oaks Drive when an oncoming driver attempted a left turn in front of them.
The Corvette couldn’t stop in time and struck the turning vehicle, and the Infiniti then crashed into the Corvette, sending it careening out of control before the Chevy struck a power box and utility pole.
The Corvette driver was thrown from the car just before it caught fire, according to 18-year-old witness Sergio Herrera.
Herrera says he pulled the Corvette driver away from the car, then waited for paramedics to arrive. Unfortunately, Jesse Zerwas, 31, died at a local hospital the next morning.
Two other vehicles also suffered damage from wreck debris.
Herrera told News4 out of San Antonio that he lives in the area and wasn’t surprised to find out that racing was involved in the accident, noting “people race on Thousand Oaks – it happens all the time.”
Herrera says he would like to forget the aftermath of the tragic accident but told News4 that “I just know in my heart I did everything I possibly could to try to help and it hurts knowing that he didn’t make it.”
