[GALLERY] Vettes and Jets on the Lex 2016 (58 Corvette photos)

Over the weekend in Corpus Christi, TX., 400 Corvettes converged on the flight deck of the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay for an event known as “Vettes and Jets on the Lex”. The show has been held every other year since 2009 but this will be the final time that Corvettes will be hoisted to the flight deck due to the age of the elevator that lifts the cars.

We put a call out for photos earlier in the week and one of our readers responded with a fantastic photo gallery from the event. We picked nearly 60 images which are displayed below but you can go to OurVettesandJets.com to see all the photos from Phil Lewis.

According to Stephen, McCravy, events coordinator with the Corpus Christi Corvette Club who hosted the event, attendees of “Vettes and Jets on the Lex 2016” came from 19 states and as far away as Canada. The show broke a record for most Corvettes on an aircraft carrier and raised nearly $60,000 for the Wounded Warriors Project and United Service Organizations of South Texas.

It’s sad that this will be the final Vettes and Jets on the Lex, but the Museum says all that lifting of fiberglass puts too much stress on the aging elevator. The ship was commissioned in 1943 and was the oldest working aircraft carrier in the US fleet when she was decommissioned in 1991. During World War II, the USS Lexington operated in the Pacific and spent 21 months in combat.
