Mecum’s Daytime Monterey Auction will be kicking off tomorrow and will run through Saturday. Over 600 cars will be offered for sale and in that mix you’ll find 34 Corvettes which include a first year 1953, a 1969 L88 Convertible and a 1963 Corvette Z06 Tanker.
The 1963 Corvette is already a desirable candidate for any collection with the iconic Sport Coupe version featuring the 1-year “split-window” design. But Corvette Chief Engineer pushed the boundaries of GM’s corporate racing ban by basically building a factory-prepped racecar when equipped with the “Special Performance Equipment” option known as RPO Z06.
Of the 21,513 Corvettes built in 1963, only 199 were equipped with the Z06 option and of those, only 63 had the 36-gallon gas tank. All Z06s were equipped with the 327/360 hp fuel injected small block, along with a beefed up 4-speed manual transmission, suspension and brakes.
Having talked to owners of the Corvette Z06, one of the mechanical features that make this car so special are the Z06’s drum brakes:
The Z06’s drum brakes were crucial to the car’s performance. Mounted on ventilated backing plates with external cooling scoops, the Z06’s large cast iron finned drums contained segmented sintered metallic linings, forward self-adjusters and unique 24-blade internal cooling fans; a unique dual-circuit Kelsey-Hays master cylinder and Delco-Moraine vacuum booster controlled their operation.
Lot #F150 is a 1963 Corvette Z06 coupe and will be offered on Friday, August 19th. Restored in the early 1980s, it has been in storage until just recently. The matching numbers Corvette is finished in Riverside Red with black interior and the radio delete option. The Z06 runs on the rare finned aluminum wheels with early production two-bar knock-off spinners which are wearing Firestone 6.70 bias-ply tires.
The Corvette Z06 is expected to sell in the range of $325,000 – $375,000. Visit www.mecum.com to view other lots available at the Daytime Monterey Auction. Over 20 hours of auction action will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network with the majority of episodes running tape delayed over the following week.
