Most Baby Boomers remember all the hysteria about the 1978 Indy 500 Corvette pace car, but Chevrolet’s connection to the race goes a lot further back than that, even to before there was a 500-mile race at Indianapolis, in fact.

To celebrate that lengthy partnership between Chevy and Indy, the National Corvette Museum today opened a salute to the Indy 500 that runs through Oct. 14, 2016.

The exhibit includes memorabilia, videos, Indy history, and of course cars, including priceless racers from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum like Smokey Yunick’s sidecar, the 1972 Mark Donohoe winning car, and Duntov’s SS. Collector Bill Akin of Hermitage, Tenn., also has loaned four cars to the Museum as examples of Indy machines in the 1940s and ’50s.

Jeanetta Holder of Alvaton, Ky., has been giving Indy 500 winners her hand-made quilts since 1976, even being granted access to make the presentation in the Winner’s Circle. Her latest creation just completed for Alex Rossi, winner of the recent 100th Indy 500, will be on display.

In all, 12 historic cars will be in the Museum’s Exhibit Hall. Best of all, you can see the entire exhibit as part of the regular admission price.
