Driver in Fatal Corvette Test Drive Crash is Now a Fugitive

The test driver charged with vehicular manslaughter after a CarMax salesman riding with him died in an accident is on the run, authorities said this week.

Alex Demetro, 28, of Union City, Calif., was test driving the Corvette on Feb. 23 when he crashed the car on Mercedes Lane in Ontario, Calif., resulting in the death of salesman Warren Smale.

Demetro was supposed to appear in court on March 7 in Rancho Cucamonga to answer charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of a drug, and driving on a suspended license, according to San Bernardino County Superior Court records.

Demetro was released from jail on Feb. 24 after posting $100,000 bail, but when he didn’t show up on March 7, a warrant for his arrest was issued and he was charged with Smale’s death.

Police are asking anyone who knows where Demetro is to contact Ontario Police Officer Brian Olivo at 909-395-4646. If you’d like to remain anonymous, call We-Tip at 800-78-CRIME.

According to witnesses, Demetro was driving the Corvette at high speed, estimated to be up to 70mph, when he lost control and crashed into a tree.

Smale, who was critically injured and taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead, is the first CarMax salesman to die during a test drive, the company said.

Sgt. Jeff Higbee of the Ontario Police Department said Demetro was “on more than one prescription medication.”
