[ACCIDENT] Corvettes and Deer Do Not Play Well Together

Corvettes and deer don’t mix.

This writer can attest to that fact. In September of 2014, I was minding my own business on the way home from a trip to Sonoraville, Ga., in my red 1997 Corvette, when all of a sudden, wham, I heard a big bang at the front of my car.

I’ve always been one who thought he would have plenty of time to dodge a deer, but I have to admit that I was very wrong. Had I not seen Bambi’s face looking pitifully at me right above my side mirror for just a split second, I really wouldn’t have known what had just happened. It happened that unexpectedly …. and that fast.

Since it was dark and I was just 10 minutes from home, I waited until I pulled into my garage to check out the damage. I was terrified of what I would find, but it turned out to be minor – a cracked fender, a mirror hanging down with the glass gone, a busted headlight cover (I had just replaced the gears to make it go up and down!), a scratch down the driver’s door, a small crack on my targa top. Oh, and a little piece of deer hair stuck in a crack in the fender to prove just what happened.

It could have been a lot worse, though, and I’m just grateful the deer didn’t decide to come on inside the car and do some more damage, like to my skull!

That’s why I can definitely empathize with the owner of this red C6 Corvette that just suffered much the same fate as me, though his damage is worse. Sounds very similar to my experience, according to his post on Corvette Forum:

“Traveling down Rt 80W in PA [Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania] and bam, all off a sudden I have Bambi’s face crashing into my windshield. Luckily I am OK, and there were no other repercussions since traffic was heavy.”

He figures the windshield, fender, door, and mirror will have to be replaced.

Like me, this guy had just spent some money on his Corvette, as he reported on the Corvette Forum:

“Worst two parts are that I spent last week getting it all detailed out and that ironically I had a 30-minute conversation at work with some hunters who were discussing their conquests. I, of course, commented that I only had one kill so far (05 Pathfinder almost ten years to the day), and I hoped to keep it that way. Less than 24 hours later I had this mess on my hands.”

Ironically, on the way to work today, I heard a news report that this is a peak time for deer to crash into cars because they are searching for a mate. Here’s hoping a deer doesn’t confuse your Corvette for Bambi! Stay safe out there!
