1958 Fuelie Collection Heading to Mecum Indy

When it comes to our Corvettes, enthusiasts will collect just about anything. Some collections focus on rare, low production cars while others feature only low mile cars. Others may even consist of a single color like the black collection Mecum sold a few years ago. Coming up in Indianapolis this weekend, Mecum will be selling a collection of 1958 fuel injected Corvettes – one in each color available in 1958.

The 1958 model year spawned many new exterior and interior features. Outside Corvettes now had dual headlights on each of the new front fenders. A louvered hood and chrome trunk spears highlighted the rest of the exterior enhancements. Inside Corvettes now had a pebble-grain interior showcasing improved instrumentation and a passenger side grab bar. Buyers had their choice of 8 colors: Tuxedo Black (493 produced), Snowcrest White (2,477), Signet Red (1,399), Silver Blue (2,006), Regal Turquoise (510), Panama Yellow (455), Silver (193), and Charcoal (1,631).

Larry Gerig, owner of Erie Haven Concrete, compiled the 1958 fuelie collection. Gerig is also the owner and curator of the Corvette Classics Museum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He has been involved in the Corvette hobby for over 30 years and has restored more than seventy Corvettes. His cars have claimed countless Bloomington Gold and NCRS accolades. This is his second fuelie collection. Previously he compiled a 1957 fuelie collection.

Gerig’s fuelie collection consists solely of the highest quality restored 1958 Corvettes. All 8 cars are the high-horsepower fuelie variety. All were restored by Larry and are Bloomington Gold certified. They’ve all claimed NCRS Top Flight awards at 99 points or higher. In 2011 the cars took home Triple Diamond awards at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals (MCACN).

Like all Corvettes, each one of the cars in the collection has a unique back story. The black car is one-family-owned former race car with a red interior and heater and radio delete. It was built in the final week of 1958 production. The Inca Silver car is one of just 193 built that year. It is also a radio delete car model wearing a red interior. Although it’s hard to pick a favorite, we’re pretty partial to the Panama Yellow car with its black interior and white soft top.

We’ve been fortunate to have seen this collection firsthand both at the 2011 MCACN and again last year at Gerig’s museum as part of a NCRS event. It’s a stunning collection of the best 1958 had to offer. We wish one (or more) of these would end up in our garage this weekend.
