The Corvettes were smaller and the race track was marked out with bales of hay.

But the competition was anything but tiny at the 21st Annual Mini Corvette Challenge sponsored Saturday by Junior Achievement at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky.

Teams of two to four drivers, pit crew members, and team assistants gathered for the event, which has raised more than $550,000 for JA since 1995.

One satisfied racer was Rene Rodrigue, competing on behalf of Hill’s Pet Nutrition in Bowling Green.

“We were hoping for exactly the kind of race we had,” he told WBKO.com. “We wanted to have a good clean run. Nothing too crazy, have good solid pit stops. They both went great, had great driver changes, great tire change. First, second, three drivers kept it clean and it turned out to be exactly how we were hoping it would, was a fun race.”

Junior Achievement of South Central Kentucky President Drew Martin said it was great to see everyone from the community turn out.

“We have a lot of local businesses here, and we’re very thankful for their support and the benefit of Junior Achievement,” he said.

“We’ve got a great board of directors that have helped us,” Martin continued, “also have an amazing staff and they’ve been instrumental in making sure this event goes off without a hitch.”

Competition started in Parking Lot A of the NCM at 10 a.m. Saturday, with about 20 area teams competing in multiple heat races in their custom-tooled and detailed Corvette go-carts to determine their positions in the final three races for the Gold Cup.

Teams were required to make a designated pit stop during the race to change drivers – and a tire – to display their driving and technical skills against other teams.

Area students also got involved in the action as each mini Corvette race team was partnered with an area school, with the school having the most students and faculty present on race day earning $500 and the Papa John’s Pride Cup, along with a pizza party compliments of Papa John’s.

Martin praised local support for the Challenge.

“This longstanding event exemplifies the commitment of local businesses and corporate sponsors towards Junior Achievement within our community,” he said. “By participating in this event, we are able to implement programs into the schools so that students can become financially literate and workforce ready. Even though only one team may win the Gold Cup, the real winners are all the students who are able to benefit from these programs.”

Martin said any business or sponsor interested in helping with next year’s Challenge may call Junior Achievement at 270-782-0280.
