Under the progressive leadership of Executive Director Wendell Strode and his enthusiastic staff of Corvette aficionados, the National Corvette Museum (NCM) has announced the creation of its new Vehicle Maintenance and Preservation Department. The new organization will be responsible for maintaining and preserving the ever-increasing number of NCM-owned vehicles. The 12 cars donated in 2013 plus the 13 cars the NCM received in 2014 bring to 62 the total number of cars now owned by the Museum.

Philip Wheeler and Daniel Decker will manage and run the new department which will be responsible for the maintenance and preservation of all of the cars on display in the Museum, as well as those in use at the newly opened NCM Motorsports Park. Overseeing the work on 62 cars should not be intimidating for Philip Wheeler as he has a personal collection of over 100 cars, 40 of which are housed in his personal showroom. According to Phil, “We will be going over every car that has been donated to the Museum, and begin a new maintenance record for each one, making sure they are fully serviced and drivable – checking for any leaks or other issues that need to be addressed. In addition to that, we’ll be making sure that the cars at the track are safe, serviced and always ready to go.”

Daniel Decker is an ASE-certified mechanic who has been restoring and working on cars for the last 27 years. Understandably, Daniel says, “I’m excited to be here. This is a new program so we have a lot of work ahead of us. Once it is up and running, I feel like it is going to be great.”

The maintenance department will initially be located just past the Engineering and Design display area. Visitors to the Museum may periodically see Phil and Daniel working in the garage bay, adding another exciting element to the Museum tour experience. The new department members are looking forward to meeting Museum members and guests. “To anyone thinking of donating their cars to the Museum,” Phil says, “I want them to know that their cars will be in good hands.”

Preservation of its artifacts is the raison d’être of any good museum and it’s a welcome sign that the NCM has taken this important step.
