Ever since it was introduced to the public in 1953, the Chevrolet Corvette has been a trend-setter.

The seventh-generation Stingray unveiled in January continues that tradition in brilliant fashion, and the automotive press continues to take notice.

The latest: The Motor Press Guild, the largest automotive media association in North America, announced today that the 2014 Corvette Stingray is the winner of its 2013 Innovation Vehicle of the Year Award in the over $29,000 category.

“The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette is an innovation and technology tour de force, resulting in a world class sports car with an unmatched combination of performance and value,” said committee chairman John Dinkel. “The car is race track developed, tuned and tested, yet it is as comfortable, refined and mild-mannered on the street as a Chevy Impala . . . until you mash down on the loud pedal.

Finding this much technology and refinement in a sports car costing just over $50,000 is mind boggling.”

Motor Press Guild announced the award at the LA Auto Show’s MPG Motoring Invitational Presented by Forza Motorsport 5 and Xbox One.

Joining the Corvette in the winner’s circle was the 2013 Mazda Mazda3, which won the under $29,000 division.

A group of 12 finalists was chosen from the nominees by a panel of experts, and then MPG’s journalist and analyst members decided on the winners based on innovation, technology, engineering, safety, environmental impact, price, affordability, and value. Voters were aided with information provided by AutoHarvest about advanced technologies of the nominees.

In the case of the Stingray, those advances include the use of lightweight, high-tech materials, along with “remarkable” fuel economy for a V8 engine and “invigorating” design, according to a release from MPG.

MPG President Aaron Gold congratulated Chevrolet on the IVY award.

“We had an incredible group of contenders,” Gold said, “but both MPG’s IVY panel of experts, which included John Dinkel, BJ Killeen, Rex Parker, Mark Rechtin, Greg Whale, Patrick Hong, and Nate Schroeder and our journalist and analyst members, agreed that these vehicles represent the year’s best in innovation.”
