August 2009 Corvette Sales

Corvette sales have sunk to their lowest point since the beginning of the automotive recession which started the second half of 2008. In August, GM delivered 746 Corvettes, down from 966 in July and -82% off the 4,242 Corvettes delivered in the same time period a year ago. For the calendar year (Jan-Aug) there have been 9,210 Corvettes delivered, a decline of -56.3% from 2008 sales of 21,066.

Based on historical data, we believed that August ’09 would have been better as the factory started building the 2010 models including the new Grand Sport. However, because of the extended furloughs at the assembly plant, dealers are just now starting to receive the new cars ordered by customers so look for these sales numbers to rebound in September.

Nationwide, dealer inventories have shrunk to levels we’ve never seen. Although we don’t have any inventory numbers yet for how many 2010 models are in dealer showrooms, the 2008 and 2009 are very encouraging. As of today (9/02) 201 2008 Corvettes and 3,667 2009 Corvettes are available. A year ago, the total inventory of available new Corvettes was 7,605.
