June 2008 Corvette Sales

What a difference a month makes. Last month I was happily reporting that despite the economy, GM delivered nearly 3,000 new Corvettes in May. Yesterday’s release of June’s sales report is a very different story for Corvette as sales were down sharply with only 2,082 Corvettes delivered. That’s a drop of -28.4% month to month and the decline is even greater (-31.8%) when comparing June 2008 to June 2007.

June has traditionally been a good month for Corvette sales and now all those extra Corvettes are showing up on Chevrolet dealer lots. Last month’s Corvette Stock Report showed 7,697 2008 models on the ground and as of yesterday there are now 8,760 Corvettes available at dealer’s nationwide.

This is not the best news for Chevrolet dealers as production for the 2009 Corvette models are underway and Corvettes have begun shipping from the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. However, this could be very good new for consumers. GM traditionally offers several incentives and discounts on last year’s models which is usually the only time these lot-clearing offers are made available on the Corvette. And unlike last year which saw the 2008 refreshed with the LS3 engine and a variety of interior updates, the differences between the “old” 2008 and “new” 2009 are very minor.

  1. I was seriously in the market for a 2008 Corvette this past Spring. Perhaps if GM had made some moves with incentives then I might be driving a new C6 now rather than the 350Z I bought from a very hungry Nissan dealer at the end of their May "Tent" sale. The two year trend on Corvette sales is pretty concerning!
