For six previous weekends, Dana Mecum has been holding court at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds and doing what he does best – selling Corvettes and muscle cars. Two weeks ago Mecum’s Muscle Cars & More series that aired on the HD Theater network ended with a night of Corvettes. So it was with some interest that I tuned in over the weekend of May 15-17th to see the group of Corvettes offered at the newly relocated Spring Classic. What struck me the most about the Spring Classic Corvettes was how affordable some of these cars were.
Over the four day auction we counted 53 Corvettes offered with 37 selling. That’s 70% of Corvettes that were offered were sold for a total of $1,457,300. That’s an average of $39,386 per Corvette.
The top sale and the only Corvette to break the $100,000 barrier was a White 1968 Corvette Coupe with an L89 427/435 aluminum-head engine, which sold for $115,000. This Corvette features just 9,865 original miles and comes with a bevy of awards and certifications including NCRS 4 Star Bowtie, NCRS National Top Flight, Bloomington Gold Survivor and Bench Certification and the Triple Crown Award.
Second on the top selling list was a 1962 Fawn Beige Corvette with a 327/360 Fuel Injected engine coupled to a 4-speed transmission. Sold for $90,000, the ’62 features a fresh body-off restoration by an NCRS member who has been judging solid axle Corvettes since 1997.
We also saw a number of midyear Corvettes selling at prices not seen recently. However we were not at the auction and the descriptions of some of these Corvettes are severely lacking in details. Having said that, 5 midyears out of 14 offered sold for under $40,000.
Early C3 Corvettes models were out in force at the Spring Classic. Six Corvettes from 1969 were offered with 5 selling. Helped by the high price of our L89 Top Seller, these Corvettes sold for an average of $55,900.
